Character Breakdown
RENO SWEENEY – A charismatic nightclub singer and former evangelist, she is clever, witty,
persuasive and extremely confident. Strong singing and dancing required, as well as comedic timing.
Sings : I Get A Kick Out Of You, Friendship, Blow Gabriel Blow and Anything Goes. Vocal Range :
Alto/Belt

RENO’S ANGELS – 4 backup singer/dancers in Reno’s act. They are showgirls with pizzazz and
personality. All 4 must have strong dancing skills, including tap. Various vocal ranges.
Angel # 1 – Purity
Angel # 2- Chastity
Angel # 3 - Charity
Angel # 4 – Virtue

HOPE HARCOURT – A beautiful heiress with a strong sense of duty, she is willing to sacrifice love
to satisfy her mother’s wishes. Strong singing and some dance required. Sings: It’s De-lovely,
Goodbye Little Dream and All Through the Night. Vocal Range : Soprano

BILLY CROCKER – A young businessman who is in love with Hope, he is charismatic and
charming. Strong singing required and should be able to dance or move well. Sings :Easy to Love,
You’re the Top, It’s De-Lovely, All Through The Night. Vocal Range : Baritone/Tenor

LORD EVELYN OAKLEIGH – Hope’s energetic, quirky and good-natured aristocratic fiancé.
English accent but with a fascination for American slang. Strong singing and ability to move well as
well as comedic timing required. Sings : The Gypsy In Me. Vocal Range : Baritone

EVANGELINE HARCOURT – Hope’s overbearing but aristocratic mother who is mainly concerned
with money and social status. Sings with ensemble only.

ELISHA WHITNEY – Billy’s boss. A successful Wall Street banker of advanced age who is
nearsighted and thinks he is always right. Sings : The Crew Song. Vocal Range : Baritone

MOONFACE MARTIN – Public Enemy # 13, a loveable gangster who is also loyal to Billy. Requires
strong comic timing plus ability to sing well. Sings : Friendship, Be Like The Bluebird. Vocal Range :
Baritone
ERMA – A vivacious, playful, independent gangster’s “gun moll “with a “Joisey“ accent. Sings :
Buddy, Beware. Strong singing, comedic timing and dancing required. Vocal Range : Mezzo/Belt

SPIT & DIPPY – Two rascally New York City street toughs. Must double in Ensemble.

CAPTAIN OF THE S.S. AMERICAN – Confident, with a take charge attitude. Middle Aged. Sings
:There’s No Cure Like Travel, Public Enemy Number One. Vocal Range: Baritone.

SHIP’S PURSER – Sings : Public Enemy Number One and doubles in the Ensemble.

HENRY T. DOBSON – A minister taking his converts, Spit & Dippy, to the Westminster Conference.
Strong comic timing, doubles in the Ensemble.

8 MALE ENSEMBLE / 4 to 6 FEMALE ENSEMBLE – Various roles will be cast from the Ensemble,
as well as being sailors, passengers, stowaways and crew of the S.S. American. Strong singing and
the ability to move well is a plus. There are several large production numbers that feature the
Ensemble.
