Assignment – 2 (CLO1, PLO1)

Note: Be brief, to the point, write the problem statement prior to solution,
make neat figs, ref to figs, show vectors where required, do not write or solve
any problem on Title Page.
Problem 1: What is the electric field 30 cm from a charge q = 4.2 x 10-9C?

Problem 2: In an ionized HE++ atom, nucleus and both the electrons are separated by 36.5 pm (Pico
meter). Find E field at the location of electrons.

Problem 3: Two large parallel plates 1 cm apart, E field in the region between the plates is uniform
and its magnitude is 104 N C-1. suppose the direction of E is vertically upward compute the force on
an electron in this field and compare it with the weight of the electron.

Problem 4: Electron in above problem is released form rest. What speed it will acquire while
travelling 1 cm. find its KE and the time required as it reaches the lower plate

Problem 5: If the electron in Problem 3 is projected into the uniform E field with a horizontal velocity
Vo . Find the equation of its trajectory.

Problem 6: Find E Field at points a, b, c in above arrangement of charges, Solve the problem as part b
if both the charges in the fig above are positive.

Problem 7: Find E Field due to a disk of charge using coulomb’s Law.

Problem 8: E field above the surface of Earth is 2.3 x105 NC-1, find surface charge density at its
surface. If radius of Earth is 6370 Km, find total charge carried by the Earth.

Problem 9: Find Electrical field using Coulomb’s law as well as Gauss’s Law

a. Infinite line of charge

b. Infinite sheet of charge

Problem 10: Find E field using Gauss’s law

a. Outside a conductor carrying charge q

b. Outside and inside the Parallel plate capacitor

Problem 11: How can we say that Gauss’s Law is more fundamental than Coulomb’s Law.
