Purple 42 - The Magic Issue

Purple Institute 2024 no ISBN Acqn 36218
Hb 24x33cm 512pp col ills £45

Today, our societies are facing the failure of rationalism and progressivism; things are breaking
down, despite our having the human, scientific, financial, and even political means to advance
towards a better future, both individual and collective. Could magic be a way to re-enchant the
world? Perhaps it can offer an alternative for those who seek other techniques and knowledge to
evolve personally, reassure themselves, regain confidence, and engage their creative
consciousness in a different way and rediscover the world's beauty. 'Purple' delves into the
archaic, multifaceted realm of magic, where each subject, series, text, and interview explores a
magical door, key, or formula.

Tools #04 - To Cut

Tools Magazine 2024 ISBN 9782957876938 Acqn 36240
Pb 21x30cm 248pp col ills £29.25

Tools magazine is the brainchild of Clementine Berry, who also founded the Twice art direction
studio in Paris. This annual publication aims to simultaneously promote and investigate the
details of manufacturing techniques and expertise used in art, design, interior architecture,
industry and trade. Each issue focuses on a particular technique (moulding, folding, etc.), and the
theme is used to select feature subjects and pieces, as well as the persons interviewed. Tools is
crafted as a comprehensive inventory of design techniques. Weaving together past and present,
it draws on history to illustrate how techniques have been handed down through the ages, paying
homage to the creators behind the cult objects we use in our everyday lives, and whose work
embodies the stories that lie at the very genesis of our shared human ingenuity.

Science of the Secondary 15 – Floor

Atelier Hoko 2024 ISBN 9789811896088 Acqn 36238
Pb 18x25cm 60pp col ills £20.25

Very few things in our everyday thrive by doing absolutely nothing. The floor might just be a rare
exception; devoid of any vitality or ambition-characteristics at odds with a society obsessed with
progress-it remains unapologetically passive. Yet, despite its unyielding commitment to inertia,
the floor remains largely ignored and relegated to the background. One would think that its sheer
size alone, comparable to that of the lesser tamed ground that we trample upon outdoors, ought
to make it a subject of wide interest. As the only building element that we physically contact with
the most, our expectations of the floor are disappointingly pragmatic; it should not shake, give
way, or tilt. Mostly, it should be flat as we all know of those amongst us, who descend into
melodramatic despair each time they encounter an uneven floor, though the rationale behind
such obsession with flat-ness is beyond us here. 'Science of the Secondary: Floor' is the fifteenth
edition in the series of ongoing research conceived and developed by Atelier HOKO.

Martijn in 't Veld - Potato Bones

Happy Potato Press 2024 ISBN 9789083347745 Acqn 36227
Pb 14x19cm 88pp col ills £17.50

'Potato Bones' is a illustrated collection of text works, poems, and prose that In 't Veld wrote
between 2016 and 2024. During this period, he published a wide variety of books under the name
Happy Potato Press. Those books, or better said, potatoes, took many forms and ranged from
poetry to picture books and from art books to children's books. The writings in this book never fit
into any of those publications, yet they feel essential to them, like the bones inside our bodies-
invisible, but without them, we would be mere mush, sliding through the streets.

Jochen Gerner – Caniscope

Editions B42 2024 ISBN 9782494983137 Acqn 36230
Pb 7x9cm 96pp col ills £18

A small chapter in the book Dogs, published in 2023, this collection of 56 forms was drawn by
Jochen Gerner in KOH-I- NOOR two-tone coloured pencils (blue and red) on old bar notebooks,
in a furtive gesture of note-taking and graphic experimentation. Leaving aside felt pens with
pigmented Indian ink in favour of a clear, uncluttered line. Sublimated by the famous two-tone
television pencils, Caniscope examines the canine question in a radically different style. Ghostly
silhouettes adorned with two round eyes, creeping profiles held on a leash, hairy heads
punctuated by a nose, these abstract modules resemble elliptical dogs whose analysis would
have focused solely on the texture of their coat. The lines are densely juxtaposed, parallel or
criss-crossed, wavy, trembling or straight, creating a catalogue of fluffy materials.

Keiichi Tanaami - Adventures of Memory

Seigensha Art Publishing 2024 ISBN 9784861529467 Acqn 36220
Pb 22x30cm 420pp col ills £39.50
Text in Japanese

This is the official catalogue for the career-spanning retrospective exhibition of Japanese pop
artist Keiichi Tanaami (1936-2024), held at the National Art Center, Tokyo. His brain-melting,
protean oeuvre spans not only fine art but also illustration, graphic design, and video. Fuelled by
psychedelic forms, comic books, electric colours, and Hollywood films, the decidedly reactionary
practice he developed since the 1960s has since led to worldwide acclaim. A self-described
"image director", Tanaami was also inspired by Andy Warhol's multidisciplinary approach and
became fascinated with the potential of printed matter as an artistic medium capable of
duplication and proliferation.

Poul Kjaerholm - Timeless Minimalism

Seigensha Art Publishing 2024 ISBN 9784861529610 Acqn 36222
Pb 22x30cm 208pp col ills £30.50

Poul Kjaerholm (1929-1980) is counted among the giants of modern Scandinavian furniture
design. While mid-twentieth-century Scandinavian furniture is typically associated with the
warmth of wood, Kjaerholm's designs were marked by highly disciplined forms shaped from hard
stone and metal; his works harmonize well with Japanese architecture, which perhaps explains
why he is so well embraced by connoisseurs in the country. This book presents the collection of
one such enthousiast, Noritsugu Oda, who specializes in chairs. Some fifty masterpieces along
with a wealth of valuable design drawings and archival photographs trace Kjaerholm's career
from his beginnings under the noted furniture designer Hans J. Wegner to his death at the age of
fifty-one.

Neutral Colors 2024 ISBN 9784909932136 Acqn 36235
Pb 18x26cm 262pp col ills £29.25

The fifth issue of 'Neutral Colors' takes on "language" as its theme. Language, the editors claim,
is a notion that cannot be communicated. In pursuit of a modern-day Rosetta Stone, the
magazine is fully designed to express the essence of language through visual imagery and
concepts. From tracing traditional Indonesian scripts, onomatopoeia, and the Japanese dance
theatre known as butoh, to cephalopods and seeking a father's language, this issue's contents
are as varied as the appearance of the magazine's pages. 'Neutral Colors' is an independent
Japanese publication featuring vibrant offset and Risograph printing combined with a saddle-
stitched binding.

Corraini Edizioni 2024 ISBN 9791254931219 Acqn 36225
Pb 11x18cm 208pp col ills £27.50

In 2015, Marti Guixe and architect Pau Badia opened the Ex-Designer Project Bar in Barcelona,
the first bar built entirely with 3D printers. Photographed by Inga Knolke, the book documents the
visionary project, detailing the bar's adventures, the 3D printing of its components, and the
evolution of its name into an exhibition piece at DHub in Barcelona. Closed in 2020 due to
COVID-19, the bar was carefully deconstructed to preserve its concept. Its self-supporting design
and elements can be repurposed for other uses, reflecting Guixe's innovative approach.

This is Me and Only Me

Corraini Edizioni 2024 ISBN 9791254931035 Acqn 36234
Hb 17x21cm 120pp col ills £29.25

This is me, and only me. But what makes me...me? The world is full of numbers, details, and
beautiful things to observe. But what do you take particular note of? What do you find the most
interesting or worthy of being measured, documented, and drawn? What you choose to notice
can teach you a lot about who you are and what you care about. And if you use symbols, colors
and annotations to visualize and add context to your observations, you can make a beautiful
portrait that tells the story of you! In "This is Me, and Only Me" Giorgia Lupi and Madeleine
Garner show how everything we observe about the world around us can teach us something
about who we are inside. Noticing what makes us happy, sad, or excited; seeing what makes us
and our friends laugh; discovering that we all see the stars in the sky, but maybe we choose to
remember them differently from a friend. All these details and many more can lead readers,
young and adult alike, to take a closer look at what they notice about the world -- and therefore,
themselves.

Farah Al Qasimi – Patterns

Note Note Editions 2024 ISBN 9782493467072 Acqn 36264
Pb 21x26cm 56pp col ills £39

Farah Al Qasimi takes us into her kaleidoscopic world, where, beyond their beauty and softness,
the patterns and objects she captures embody contradictions. For her, they talk about who we
are, our context and our way of relating. We sometimes see how something designed for beauty
can be completely weathered or used in an unintended way. That failure - eventual and
unavoidable imperfection - feels like a human characteristic to the artist. She confesses she has
empathy for objects, almost granting them souls. Sensitive to ideas of longevity and
overconsumption, she observes their travels between cultures and how they are reimagined
depending on the environment. Dating back to childhood and her love for a particular Persian rug,
motifs are key for Farah Al Qasimi, who sees them as windows into universes of their own.

The Arzhang Sketchbook

Nazar Publishing 2024 no ISBN Acqn 36286
Hb 12x17cm 154pp col ills £18

'Arzhang' is the name of a book of illustrations by the Iranian prophet Mani (ca. 216-274). Known
as a painter and the founder of Manichaeism, Mani produced illustrations to spread his teachings
to disciples. Despite gaining a tremendous following, today there are very few records left in
Mesopotamia or Egypt, the two main regions where Manichaeism first emerged, of an artistic
tradition associated with the religion. Surviving paintings are miniatures and murals created
between the 9th and 12th centuries, found in western China. Inspired by these works, Iranian
artist Nikzad Nojoumi created his own Manichean interpretations, which are featured on the
pages of this notebook.

Vivi Touloumidi Pharmakos - Adornment As A Social Tool

Royal Academy Fine Art Antwerp 2022 ISBN 9789490521608 Acqn 36289
Pb 20x28cm 160pp col ills £27.50

Vivi Touloumidi investigates adornment as an active agent to address social discomfort,

repression, and marginalization in the public realm. Her project appropriates and subverts signs
of stigmatization employed during WWII, and through in-depth research, it proposes anew
statement pieces that speak of resilience, emancipation, and self-determination of the social
body. The publication includes a substantial selection of bureaucratic files of that time, which
have served as reference for the work. Along with images of the making process and two bodies
of work in dialogue with drawings, texts contextualise the references and the creative process in
different tones and formats, from an academic essay to a long dialogue and a poem.
