Task 1: Short Answers

1. System boundary differentiates the system from the external so for automation
system boundary it identifies which business processes are automated and non-
automated.

2. The analyst problem solving approach aligns with the steps in the SDLC i.e.
i.) Planning – recognize that the problem exists
ii.) Analysis – understand the problem
iii.) Design – specify set of solutions
iv.) Implementation – build the selected solution
v.) Support – maintain and improve system

3. Predictive approach has well defined requirements and low uncertainty. The
requirements for the project should be well understood and low technical risk.

4. Iteration involves repeating some analysis, design and implementation processes in

the SDLC cycle.

5. A model represents real world aspects where as a tool is a developing environment

or software that is used to create models.

6. Technique refers to a set of steps whereas methodology is the framework used to

carry out the various techniques.
Task 2: Critical Thinking
1. The analysis phase starts with understanding and recognizing the users’ needs by
understanding the existing systems and areas that need to improve or simply by the
need for new systems to be created to cater to various business processes. The
design phase focuses on determining a probable set of solutions to the need
identified in the analysis phase. IT is comprised of the architecture and detailed
module layer. Furthermore, the design phase will finalize and develop the solution.
The implementation phase will build the system with the details finalized during the
design phase. It primarily focuses on building a high-quality robust system. The
implementation may also include training and workshops to inform users on the use
of the system.

2. The first iteration will often address and handle the complex portions of the system
where certain work will be carried in each subsystem for each iteration to minimize
schedule dependencies.

3. The obvious technique would be to start early to avoid missing the deadline but then
again that’s always not the case, unfortunately.
Task 3: Case Study
1. Since systems are deemed very integrated nowadays, it can be said that the
proposed system is both as the system relies on inventory accounting data when
manufacturing items and when completed it updates the finished accounting
inventory.

2. Sally will need to consider heavy user participation since her knowledge of the
factory and its processes is limited. So, she needs to sought advice from experts
through interviews, questionnaires, prototyping and extensive user testing.

3. All analysis activities should involve factory workers and management. The following
design activities should also involve these individuals: prototyping, designing the user
interface, and designing and integrating controls.
