The oldest known library that no longer exists is the Ancient Library of Alexandria in
Egypt. No one is exactly sure when it was founded, but scholars agree that it was
around 200 BCE.
One of the oldest libraries in the world that still exists today is found at St. Catherine’s
Monastery in Egypt. It was built in the middle of the sixth century CE and contains
the second largest collection of religious materials in the world (after the
Vatican). The library contains ancient religious works in Greek, Hebrew and Arabic.
Unfortunately, the library is only open to the monks who live in the monastery.
The oldest library that anyone can visit is the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
It dates back to 1368 and has moved several times since then. It was even at the
Louvre once. There are over 5,000 ancient Greek manuscripts in the library. At one
point, it was also the biggest library in the world, although that distinction now
belongs to the British Library.
