Lesson 1: Science and Scientific Process
Objectives:
Students would be able to:
⮚ Differentiate between Science and Technology.
⮚ Demonstrate the use of the scientific method.
Differentiating between Science and Technology
What is Science?
✔ Science is the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the
physical and natural world through observation (collecting information via
the senses) and experiment (the process of conducting a scientific test).
✔ Observations and experiments are used to describe and explain natural
occurrences.
✔ The word “science” comes from the Latin word “Scientia” meaning
knowledge.
Science is divided into many branches. The following are some examples:
✔ Biology- the study of living things
✔ Physics- the study of energy and natural forces
✔ Chemistry- the study of matter
✔ Astronomy - the study of stars, planets, moons and other objects or
phenomena in outer space
✔ Geology- the study of the structures of the earth
What is Technology?
✔ Technology can be defined as the application (putting scientific
information to special use) of knowledge, tools and processes to address
specific human needs and solve problems to improve the quality of life.
✔ Using technology, people are able to control and adapt to their natural
environments. Our development and use of tools, the building of ships,
and the invention of medical devices such as X-ray and MRI scanners are
all examples of technology.
How does the scientific process work?
✔ Scientific understandings, discoveries and inventions are used to solve
problems that directly affect peoples’ lives as science seeks to understand
as well as provide models for how the world works.
✔ Scientific knowledge can be used to inform personal and community
decisions. For example, science can help monitor and provide guidelines
to help in the recovery from the passage of a storm or hurricane.
✔ Scientific knowledge is not complete but can be built on through research
and investigations. For example, science can help in tracking and
monitoring of natural disasters, but it cannot fully prevent them from
happening.
Demonstrating the use of the scientific method
✔ The scientific method is a method that scientists use for their
investigations.
✔ It involves making accurate and careful observations, recording them,
creating hypotheses and planning, as well as carrying out investigations.
Skills used in the Scientific method
⮚ Hypothesizing: an explanation for an observation or scientific problem
that can be tested by further investigation
⮚ Planning and conducting experiments: carrying out a process to answer
questions.
⮚ Data collection: gathering numerical information
⮚ Recording and Reporting: gathering data for use and presenting it in
charts, graphs, tables where it is easily understood
⮚ Processing and analysing data and information: observing patterns and
trends within sets of data.
Final Assessment/ Task Activity
1) Explain the difference between science and technology
2) List 3 important scientific discoveries that affect everyday life.
3) Define the scientific method and list 3 skills that are needed.
