Learning Outcomes:
After completing this course, the students will be able to:

CO2: interpret the Constitution of India to deal with matter of public importance.
CO3: discuss various provisions of Indian environmental legislation.
CO4: examine the applicability of various Indian legislation on biodiversity and their

Unit-I Introduction: Need, importance and scope of environmental law; Historical


development of environmental law in India; Principles of environmental law: Sustainable
development, precautionary principle, polluter pays principle, Principles of common but
differentiated. responsibilities etc.; Role of international conventions and treaties in shaping
environmental law. Key international environmental conventions: Kyoto Protocol, Paris
Agreement, Montreal Protocol, etc..
Role of international organizations: United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Unit-II: Constitution of India and environmental protection: Dynamic interpretation of


Article 21,14 and 19 of the Constitution; Directive Principles of State policy and fundamental
duties; constitutional remedy (PIL).
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process and regulations. Public participation and
access to environmental information.
