Assignment 1 : Flow in a Lid-Driven Cavity

The lid-driven cavity flow is probably one of the most studied fluid problem in the field of
computational fluid dynamics. Lid-driven cavity flow retains a rich fluid flow physics manifested
by multiple counter rotating recirculating regions on the corners of the cavity depending on the
Reynolds number.
In this study, we consider a square cavity with a height H = 1 m. The top wall is moving with a
velocity of 1 m/s in x direction, while bottom and side walls are stationary. The flow is
considered to be flow at Re = 1000.

 Read an existing mesh file in FLUENT.

 Verify the grid for dimensions and quality.
 Change the material properties.
 Carry out solver settings and perform iterations.
 Examine the results and compare them with experimental data.
 Display and create animation for pathlines.

Assignment 1 : Flow in a Lid-Driven Cavity

For this simulation:

 What is the value of the flow density and viscosity should be selected to
achieve Re=1000 if the square cavity has a side of 1m.
 Now what possible approaches you may use to simulate the flow in a
square cavity for Re=2000.
 Is it possible to simulate the flow with the given mesh in a rectangular
domain with a width of 2m and length H=1m at Re=3000.
 Investigate the effect of the discretization scheme on the accuracy of the
results with respect to experimental data. Try 1st order, 2nd order upwind
and QUICK schemes.

After conducting the simulation:

Add to your report the following figures:

 The used Mesh, a table of the used boundary conditions

 Streamlines
 Vector plot
 Contour plots for the velocity and the static pressure
 X-Velocity, Y-Velocity at the centerlines in addition to the experimental
data.
