General Guidelines

1. A Cover page or 琀椀tle page – You should always a琀琀ach a 琀椀tle page to your assignment.
Use previous page as your cover sheet and make sure all the details are accurately 昀椀lled.
2. A琀琀ach this brief as the 昀椀rst sec琀椀on of your assignment.
3. All the assignments should be prepared using a word processing so昀琀ware.
4. All the assignments should be printed on A4 sized papers. Use single side prin琀椀ng.
5. Allow 1” for top, bo琀琀om, right margins and 1.25” for the le昀琀 margin of each page.

Word Processing Rules

1. The font size should be 12 point and should be in the style of Time New Roman.
2. Use 1.5 line spacing. Le昀琀 jus琀椀fy all paragraphs.
3. Ensure that all the headings are consistent in terms of the font size and font style.
4. Use footer func琀椀on in the word processor to insert Your Name, Subject, Assignment
No, and Page Number on each page. This is useful if individual sheets become detached
for any reason.
5. Use word processing applica琀椀on spell check and grammar check func琀椀on to help edi琀椀ng
your assignment.

Important Points:

1. It is strictly prohibited to use textboxes to add texts in the assignments, except for the
compulsory informa琀椀on. eg: Figures, tables of comparison etc. Adding text boxes in the

Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Research Theme: Big Data

Research Topic: The impact of the applica琀椀on of Big Data Technologies in opera琀椀onal
e昀케ciency
in a range of academic, scien琀椀昀椀c and economic areas.

“Big data is a term that has become more and more common over the last decade. It was
originally de昀椀ned as data that is generated in incredibly large volumes, such as internet search
queries, data from weather sensors or informa琀椀on posted on social media. Today big data has
also come to represent large amounts of informa琀椀on generated from mul琀椀ple sources that
cannot be processed in a conven琀椀onal way and that cannot be processed by humans without
some form of computa琀椀onal interven琀椀on. Big data can be stored in several ways: Structured,
whereby the data is organised into some form of rela琀椀onal format, unstructured, where data
is held as raw, unorganised data prior to turning into a structured form, or semi-structured
where the data will have some key de昀椀ni琀椀ons or structural form, but is s琀椀ll held in a format
that does not conform to standard data storage models. Many systems and organisa琀椀ons now
generate massive quan琀椀琀椀es of big data on a daily basis, with some of this data being made
publicly available to other systems for analysis and processing. The genera琀椀on of such large
amounts of data has necessitated the development of machine learning systems that can si昀琀
through the data to rapidly iden琀椀fy pa琀琀erns, to answer ques琀椀ons or to solve problems. As
these new systems con琀椀nue to be developed and re昀椀ned, a new discipline of data science
analy琀椀cs has evolved to help design, build and test these new machine learning and ar琀椀昀椀cial
intelligence systems. U琀椀lising Big Data requires a range of knowledge and skills across a broad
spectrum of areas and consequently opens opportuni琀椀es to organiza琀椀ons that were not
previously accessible. The ability to store and process large quan琀椀琀椀es of data from mul琀椀ple
sources has meant that organisa琀椀ons and businesses are able to get a larger overall picture of
the pa琀琀ern of global trends in the data to allow them to make more accurate and up to date
decisions. Such data can be used to iden琀椀fy poten琀椀al business risks earlier and to make sure
that costs are minimized without compromising on innova琀椀on. However, the rapid applica琀椀on
and use of Big Data has raised several concerns. The storage of such large amounts of data
means that security concerns need to be addressed in case the data is compromised or
altered in such a way to make the interpreta琀椀on erroneous. In addi琀椀on, the ethical issues of

Page No 10

the storage of personal data from mul琀椀ple sources have yet to be addressed, as well as any
sustainability concerns in the energy requirements of large data warehouses and lakes”.
(Pearson, 2023)

2.2.3 Prepare Data collection process

2.2.3.1 Defining the Methodologies

Qualitative and Quantitative research methods

Qualitative research is defined as a market research method that focuses on obtaining

data through open-ended and conversational communication (Bhat, 2019). In this method
it concerns about ‘why’ people think so, but not about ‘what’ people think. Here it mainly

Page No 32

Downloaded by For jptuse ([email protected])

lOMoARcPSD|35825746

concerns about the observations not about numerical values. In this method data are
collected by using observations, focus groups, in-depth- interviews, etc.
1. Observations – Here the company must see how many times a transaction related
one good is carried out, peoples’ behavior etc. observation can be simple or
behavioral.
2. Focus groups –This is a small group consist of 6-10 respondents within the target
market. The main aim is to find the answers to the problems defined.
3. In-depth- interviews- This interview is conducted between face to face. So that
the researcher can get the exact information from the customers.

Benefits of this method are, in-depth understanding of the attitudes and behaviors of
people can be gain, provide content useful for practical applications, more affordable than
other research methods, mainly focus on decisions, use smaller sample space than other
research methods, etc.
Disadvantages of this are, data can’t be proved because there is no document to prove it,
less reliability and validity of data, no numerical or statistical operations, high time
concern to collect data, etc.
Qualitative research method is also very important in collecting and analyzing problems
which has been elaborated as above.

Quantitative research is defined as the systematic investigation of phenomena by

gathering quantifiable data and performing statistical, mathematical or computational
techniques (Bhat, 2019). Here numbers are involved when doing the research. If numbers
are not involving, it’s not a quantitative research method. These are descriptive,
measurable and experimental data. Quantitative research methods gather information
from many sources such as, surveys (questionnaires), interviews, records, etc.
1. Surveys (Questionnaires) – Surveys can be conducted online by emailing the
question forms to the target groups. Or else by giving them question papers
offline. These questions are designed to gather data which will help researchers to
answer their research questions.
2. Interviews – This is a verbal communication between the researcher and the
participant. From this many information is gathered and it can be over the phone
or face to face.

Page No 33

Downloaded by For jptuse ([email protected])

lOMoARcPSD|35825746

4. Records – This provide critical information to the research questions, because

these are related with numbers and these things can be proved and they are
accurate. Records are numbers and statistics used in different activities.

There’s a series of steps to follow qualitative research methods. They are, identifying the
research problem, to prepare questions for identified problems, examine the existing
work done such preparing questions, reply to the results received etc. and to develop a
research plan. For example, in this company there’s less sales of items per day, which is
the research problem. Questions should be prepared to get the reason for it. Some of
those questions are, less security, high prices and low quality of products. Then the
company have to check whether those problems have been repeated twice or someone
has answered to the questions company has to reply to it. Research plan includes from
whom these data are going to collect and how these data are going to collect. According
to this example reviews can be collected from employees, university students,
unemployed people, old citizens, etc.

Quantitative research methods are very much useful to analyze the problems of the
company. Some of the benefits of this method are, provide a relatively conclusive answer
to the research questions, output of the research is trustworthy, results can be common to
an entire target group, reliable data is collect, data can be collected quickly, scope of the
data analysis is wide, etc.
At the same time this method has one main disadvantage which is, they don’t listen to
peoples’ thoughts or opinions.
So quantitative research method is one of the best method to identify the problem and to
analyze the problem.

The above mentioned two techniques are important in different ways. The difference
between qualitative and quantitative research methods can be shown as below.
