EVIDENCE OF CHARACTER

. . . as demonstrated by a student's deeds and consistent practices

Character is what distinguishes one individual from another. It is the product of constant striving to make the right choices day after day. A
student who demonstrates excellence in character shows respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship in all of
his/her actions. NHS members exemplify school's 's mission and core values and act as role models to other students .

The student of character:


1. Consistently exemplifies positive, cheerful, friendly, ethical behavior
2. Takes constructive criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
3. Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty, academic integrity and reliability
4. Regularly exhibits courtesy, concern and respect for others
5. Complies fully with school policies, regulations and codes of student conduct
6. Complies with instructions and displays personal responsibility

How do you feel you exemplify the NHS pillar of character both in and out of the classroom? Give specific examples. Your response
should be at least 250 words and no more than 500 words.

Throughout my High School years, I have been working on my sense of character. School is a great place and time to build oneself,
not being scared but grateful to make mistakes to know what works and does not. My High School experience was different from a
regular one because of Covid; the more time I was with myself, the less of myself I felt. Pandemic years were hard, on a general level,
and deeply affected my mental health. However, they taught me something I never thought I should, learning how to be alone.
Loneliness is not the same as being alone. I learned to enjoy my own company without dependence on others for my happiness; I
learned to be my friend. I healed with acceptance and love, and I promised myself I would act the same with the people around me. In
every class I was in, I acted with respect towards others as I did with myself, without making it feel like an obligation but a choice. For
example, I was part of an IA program: The Imperfect Art of Leading, and when we did presentations to the class, feedback was always
shared as a way to improve ourselves. The moment I gave feedback, I always had the mindset of something they could do better,
expressing it respectfully. The constant back and forth interactions like this demonstrate that we can always do things better, and a
way to make it happen is in group work. Another trait that characterizes me is my ongoing positive attitude; many people wonder
how I’m always so enthusiastic. As a student, I believe everything is more accessible with a positive mindset, significantly when
cheerful and friendly behavior can “contaminate” other peers as well. Sometimes, I would go to some teachers to talk or stay after
class to share some jokes with them. Having a healthy environment is crucial for a better learning experience. In a Socratic Seminar,
as tense as these could be, I tried my best to facilitate it as much as possible so people not get nervous when talking by showing my
support. We laughed from time to time in Mr’s class; he was one of those teachers I knew I could talk to. Like when I stayed after
class to reason our discussion, showing my passion for the topic because it was a class assessment and a curiosity. If I’m given the
opportunity of joining the NHS, I will act with these character traits of respect, open-mindedness, positivism, curiosity for learning,
and more traits that would help strengthen the relationship between the NHS members, making us stronger together. The NHS
demonstrates an example for the rest, and I would responsibly assume that role as I realize that feeling love and acceptance for
others makes me a friendly and remarkable person with whom I meet.

EVIDENCE OF SCHOLARSHIP
. . . as demonstrated by a student's commitment to learning

Scholarship is characterized by a commitment to learning. A student who demonstrates excellence in scholarship is willing to spend the
necessary time to cultivate his/her mind in the quest for knowledge. Scholarship means always doing the best work possible, regardless of
impending reward. NHS members have a cumulative GPA of 6.000 or higher and demonstrate diligence, effort and passion in their pursuit of
scholarship.

How do you feel you exemplify the NHS pillar of scholarship? Include one or two specific times when you exhibited excellence in
scholarship in your response. Your response should be at least 250 words and no more than 500 words.

Having a high GPA makes me proud of myself. It costs much hard work in a short amount of time to get things done, and I do not
regret the times I stayed up late finishing the assignment/assessment to the best of my ability. I love the feeling of knowing I tried my
best without worrying so much about the grade earned; we cannot be good at everything. My sense of scholarship has worked its
way the more I knew I was a humanities person. In my World History class, I feel like many classmates had a high sense of scholarship
about the topics discussed since we got this time to share our opinions and reflections about how we view the world. Personally, I
enjoyed the class a lot, making sure I recorded what I thought, written or verbally. A clear example is my class journal, which is full of
ideas and opinions that reflect my passion for the class. During the Assessments, Mr. congratulated me via doc messages for my hard
work. I did not feel it was an obligation but a fun/intriguing learning experience. As an outcome, my grade never decreased. In the
development of my student career, teachers were conscious of my hard work, which motivated me to maintain my commitment to
learning. A commitment should never be broken, no matter what the result shows at the moment. It shows how much a person cares
about the class and the respective learning. When struggling in math class, I had an unsatisfactory grade, which made me realize that
I needed to change how I studied and distribute these times in even amounts. Ms. Frank gave us another opportunity to improve my
grade. Therefore, I prepared myself to perform better in the following assessment. I came by Ms. Frank’s room, now mentioning that
she’s my advisor, to study and ask as many questions as I needed. When I got my test back, it was a good grade, showing a
considerable improvement recalled by my teacher. When I commit to something, primarily if I know it is for my better development,
such as learning, I would ensure I get satisfied with the process I decide to do for the best outcome possible.

EVIDENCE OF LEADERSHIP
. . . as demonstrated by a student's active involvement and initiative in school activities, extracurricular clubs, or causes outside of school

Leaders take the initiative to aid others in a wholesome manner throughout their daily activities. Leaders sacrifice their personal interests in
order to yield to the needs of others. Leaders need wisdom and self-confidence to affect change in all aspects of their lives. NHS members are
leaders in the classroom and in the school. They inspire positive behaviors in others, demonstrate initiative, and solve problems.

What are the three most important leadership roles that you have fulfilled during your time as a high school student? Why do you
consider these roles to be important? Which of the leadership criteria listed above have you best demonstrated in each role? Name

Leadership Role #1 - Vice-president of the club I am part from, “Aprender Para CreSER.”

Description: As the club's vice-president, I already hold a responsibility to guide the rest and the future of my beloved club. I believe
that as a leader, one of the traits that characterize me the most is my initiative in doing activities that meet the club's objective
between other important matters (like group environment) with a positive attitude. In our reunions, I try to build comfort between
my members to make sure they feel valued to share their ideas and/or concerns in any case. I personally have much vision for APC
(my club), so I want to fulfill all its potential. A leader needs to believe that their idea or the impact they are causing is for the greater
good and positively affects society. In the APC meetings, we never leave without missing a laugh. A positive mood is essential when
running a club as it is key for people to feel inspired and believe they are doing something that matters; after all, they signed up
voluntarily. When I show my best attitude, eventually people will join it too because we as social beings have an effect on each other.

Leadership Role #2 - Being part of the International Organization “Teach for All” as a SLAC member (Student Leader Advisory
Council)

Supervising adult - Coordinator Ms.

Description: Being one of the nine members of this annual Advisory Council is an honor due to the impact our voices can make in the
organization and parts of the world where these ideas are happening. We are often interviewed or asked to share our opinion about
specific topics such as the Education System or sending support to Ukraine regarding education. I am very dedicated, promising to
benefit the most from this experience. We can choose the tasks we do, and I always make these are sent on time out of responsibility
as many people are involved in these projects, so everybody must complete their part in the planned time. It is a significant role as I
am representing my country and have the power to help it change. I love my country, and I want the best for it, so my exigency for
self-performance is high. I was never a person who needed someone behind me to complete work. Since third grade, I started doing
my homework alone without adult intervention. This role is no exception. Even though I can work with my personal supporter, which
I’m very grateful for, I always complete the tasks independently. I am enthusiastic about sharing my ideas if I know they will help
others. I am proceeding to be a SLAC member, indicating that my work is worth it and of great assistance.

Leadership Role #3 - Winter Camp Student Aid

Supervising adult - Mr./ Mr.


Description: As a volunteer who applied to be eligible as a Winter Camp assistant, I demonstrated my capacity to develop practical
solutions to the problems presented throughout my job durability. During the July break, I was one of the three student aids in
ensuring the kids arrived on time to their classes, behaved well, ate their food, and were safe. It is a big responsibility to be in charge
of little kids; sometimes, it is a challenge for them to listen, yet I was successfully a good leader for them. Sometimes the kids got lost
going to the classes, so I guided them patiently. Other times the sign-ups of the classes got messy, and the kids were unaware of
where to go, so we decided to place them in the activities with the least amount of kids. One time, a girl had trouble with a boy, so she
came to me stating that he was mistreating her. I told them to talk to each other, and I accompanied them through the process.
Ultimately, we were able to conclude the fight in an agreement. There is always a solution to a problem; leaders support their
members as much as they need in any conflict.

EVIDENCE OF SERVICE
. . . as demonstrated by a student's selfless involvement in causes dedicated to serve any groups that may require it

As a service club, the National Honor Society is highly concerned with giving its all to the school and community at large. The willingness to
work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind is a quality that is essential in NHS members. NHS
members have an established record of commitment to service. They volunteer their service willingly to help the school, the school community
and the greater community.

The student who serves:


1. Demonstrates sustained involvement in service throughout his or her high school years
2. Volunteers and provides dependable and well-organized assistance and is willing to make sacrifices to offer that assistance
3. Works well with others and is willing to take on difficult responsibilities that may not receive the spotlight or special
recognition
4. Cheerfully and enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school
5. Participates in clubs/activities and/or in clubs/activities outside of school
6. Mentors peers and other young people in our community to be positive, inclusive and learning-focused
7. Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers and students at

Service Example #1 - Student Ambassador (9th,10th, and 11th)

Description: I know what it felt to be a new student, and it can get truly hard sometimes to feel included in the community. Making
friends can be tough, so I wanted to make the new students' transition to our grade as easy as possible. I already related to the
feeling of a new student; that's why I used this knowledge to help my assigned student. It didn't feel like a task but an opportunity to
meet new people and show them the best of our community. In the eleven grade, I was the Student Ambassador leader of my grade,
loving the opportunity to organize a fun day for our new students. I was enthusiastic and involved in being a student, giving what I
once needed: support. The moment I learned of this volunteering in 9th grade, I applied with high hopes of guiding my new
classmates to a good experience. I never quit in these three years since I always seek to find ways in which I can help my community.
Nobody told me to sign up for Student Ambassadors, so I would always make that decision. I am very empathetic with the people
around me, and as a leader, I constantly check on the people I am in charge of. Emotional support is crucial for a person's well-being,
and if someone is in need, I will volunteer without expecting any reward or recognition.

Service Example #2 - Casa Alegría

Description: This group was created at the end of last year. It isn't part of the school, but we still find ways to contribute to our
Peruvian society, specifically Lima. We aim to support Common Pots and orphanages through motivational talks and especially
donations of resources that help them sustain their lives in the abandoned districts of Lima. We have worked with Santa
Bernardita's orphanage and a Common Pot for Christmas. A friend and I started this group without paying too much attention to
receiving credit for it. It is not related to school in any way, yet it is time I am willing to spend with these people who lack the
deserved attention from the government/mayor of the district. My commitment to this club is as important as the school clubs I am
part of. I always like to give my 100 % hard work to the things I am in, not because I expect applause but because helping is something
that characterizes me. As a worried citizen of my country, I believe this is something I should do (and want to do). The
time-consuming here sometimes can get chaotic, but it is no comparison to the outcomes we can get by giving.

Service Example #3 - Business Professionals for America Honor Society

Description: Since the second semester of last year, I joined the BPA Honor Society, which supervises the clubs' money management
as well as helping with some of the school activities or coming up with ideas for these like the Varsity Burgers and Sports/Club Day. I
have volunteered to help with the Varsity Burgers, showing my school's spirit. During this upcoming year, we will have more
activities as well as help host SAAC. It is fascinating to have the opportunity to help with any activities within my community.
Showing my enthusiasm for helping can be an example for others to get inspired by. It is a very active club as our meeting time is
every Friday, where it is a time to share about the following event happening at school. It depends on us to volunteer to help in these
different events. And I will always try to service as much as I can.

EVIDENCE OF COMMITMENT
NHS members meet approximately once per week and plan school-wide activities approximately three times each semester.
Attendance is MANDATORY at all weekly NHS meetings and active participation in all NHS-organized events is a requirement for
members to remain in good standing . Given your commitment to academic excellence and the number of clubs and activities that
you are likely involved in, how will you balance these commitments with your commitment to the NHS?

If joining the NHS, my time-management skills are crucial to finding a balance between my duties and activities. I already possess a
calendar and daily agenda to be able to plan ahead of time what priorities to set and things to finish on time. Calculating my times
and tasks for each day is no problem, as I even possess an app that helps me remember the day's significant events. In the past, I've
struggled with the organization, even doing projects the day before it was due; however, this way of working was something I
wanted and did change. The school has taught us to practice consciousness about our time; the greater the grade level, the more
rigorous the year, so I used 9th and 10th grade-like trials to experience ways of organizing myself and identifying the best method. I
am aware that sometimes I would have to make sacrifices in my free time, such as lunchtime (when I have free time) to do homework
or the last touches to present it at my best. Gladly, in some of the clubs I am part of, the meetings are not all the time (weekly), which
gives me less trouble of having to miss any reunion of any of the school's groups I am in. Furthermore, I am a person who knows
what I want. Thus, I know what things to prioritize, and I sincerely say that the NHS will be one of my priorities along with their
activities.

NHS members are expected to contribute actively to ensure that the school's NHS Chapter works towards meeting its mission and
to bringing the school's Mission and the school's Core Values to life. If you are chosen by the Faculty Council to become a member
of the NHS, how will you contribute to helping the NHS do this? What do you think is the priority for the NHS in 2022-2023? Why?

Living lives of integrity is something that has been repeated all over my five school's years. I believe living a life of integrity takes
courage, it takes being honest, even though sometimes it doesn’t seem like the most beneficial option, but that’s something I try to
live by. I would describe myself as an honest student, I’ve never been sanctioned for any misbehavior, and I’m not planning on
happening. I would contribute to proving how honesty is the best choice when trying to be the best version of yourself as you are not
only true to others but to yourself. There’s nothing more important than staying true to yourself. In the NHS, I would always act with
integrity by sharing my opinions and ideas of or for events with my ongoing intention of helping in the best way possible. When I see
somebody struggling, I will offer my help in making a stronger connection between the NHS members. Building a safe environment
guarantees progress in a group. These are actions I would do as most of the time, people get influenced by others to act, and I, as a
leader, want to inspire others to be the best of themselves. Also, helping to delegate roles for each member as we all have our own
strengths and weaknesses; therefore, if everybody works on what they like and are good at, the group would be unstoppable. Other
external activities I could help contribute with are alliances of the NHS with other groups or Honor Societies I am part of or leading,
not only unifying the community but as an opportunity. Creating an event or activity that is beneficial for the NHS and the other
group, and just like that, receiving more support for these activities and/or celebrating learning through these activities. The priority
for NHS is to communicate with school's students to have the best, most efficient year according to their needs and also to provide
information and/or tips to study. And one of our mantras could work smarter rather than harder. I take into perspective me as a
student plus my peers and the aspects we would want school to improve or give more attention to. At the end of the day, NHS
members already have the student experience of two to three years, so they have the power to help others not make the same
mistakes. In addition, let’s not forget about having fun. We can do random activities like the Live Student News or fun videos like
asking Trivia questions to the students in the hallways while recording to then have a laugh publishing it in the Daily Bulletin. Again,
the mantra working smarter rather than harder applies to these kinds of activities as when working smartly, there is more free time
to entertain yourself with different things.
