Sample answers and commentaries

Please note the sample answers given here show just one of many different approaches.

Sample A (Part 6, Email)

Hi Lou
My hobby is taking pictures of the things I see. I take normaly about birds. I like it because I get relax
Bye

Satisfactory attempt at the task. The target reader is informed about the first and
Content 3 third question, but a brief explanation for the second question (Where do you do it?)
is missing.
The text is coherent, but the only linking word used in the text is ‘because’. The
Organisation 3 punctuation helps to organise the text, though there is a missing full stop after
‘relax’.
Some simple grammatical forms are used with some control. The errors in the
Language 3 second sentence (‘normaly’) and third sentence (‘get relax’) may make it difficult to
understand the meaning at times.

Sample B (Part 6, Email)

Hi Lou
I love doing exercise with my dogs. I do it in my favourite park I love it because I conect with the natur.
Bye.

A very good attempt at the task. The content of the message is appropriate for the
Content 5
task and the three questions are clearly communicated.
The text is connected and coherent, and punctuation and the linking word ‘because’
Organisation 4 are used to help organise the text. A full stop or, alternatively, a simple linking word
(‘and’) is needed after ‘park’.
Simple grammatical forms are used appropriately in the text. In general, the
Language 4 vocabulary in the message is used accurately. However, the spelling errors (‘conect’,
‘natur’) may make the meaning of the third question difficult to understand.

Sample C (Part 7, Story)

The Sousan played the drums and her phonecol ringed. Her friend say to play with Sousan on the
guitar with her friend too. But her friend play the piano. She’s plays the very much song and have a lot
of fun.

Good attempt at the task. All three points of the story are communicated, though
Content 4
very little is mentioned about the first picture.
The text is connected using basic linking words (‘and’, ‘But’). In most cases, the
Organisation 3
punctuation used in the text is accurate and helps organise the text.
Some basic vocabulary is used (‘played the drums’, ‘guitar’, ‘piano’, ‘song’, ‘a lot
of fun’), and some simple grammatical forms are used with limited control. The
Language 2 use of the tenses in the text (‘Her friend say’, ‘her friend play’, ‘She’s plays’) and
errors in vocabulary (‘phonecol’, ‘the very much song’) may impede the reader’s
understanding of the story.

Sample D (Part 7, Story)

Anna was playing her favourite instrument. She had a realy cool idea. She wanted to do a music band
with her best friends. Anna phoned Kate and Lou. They arrived to her and started playing. Girls were
having a realy good time.

Very good attempt at the task. All the content of the story is relevant to the task, and
Content 5
the connections between the pictures are clearly shown.
The text is coherent, and some cohesive devices (‘She’, ‘They’, ‘and’) are used.
Organisation 4
However, no basic linking devices are used in the text (i.e. ‘First’, ‘then’, ‘next’, etc.).
Vocabulary is generally used appropriately, and even though there are small errors
Language 5 with vocabulary and the grammatical forms used (‘She wanted to do’, ‘They arrived
to her’, ‘realy’), the meaning is clear.
