What is Natural Family
Planning?
Natural Family Planning (NFP)
describes various modern
methods of achieving or
avoiding pregnancy based on
knowledge of the signs and
symptoms of human fertility.
Advantages of Natural Family Planning

● They help women become more aware of their cycles and

related physiological changes.
● Couples can either plan for achieving or avoiding a
pregnancy using their awareness of the woman’s fertility
pattern.
● Women are able to better recognize abnormalities in their
menstrual cycles and reproductive systems as a result of
greater awareness of their bodies.
● It promotes communication and responsibility-sharing
within couples.
● It is acceptable within all cultures and religious groups.
Disadvantages of Natural Family
Planning
● They do not protect the couple against sexually
transmitted infections (STIs). Where appropriate,
couples must use condoms or other barrier methods as
well.
● Time and effort must be invested to observe and
accurately record fertility indicators, which may not be
possible for busy women.
● It is a couple-centered process so both partners need to
agree to use these methods.
How does natural family
planning work?
The calendar, basal body temperature,
and cervical mucus methods are
combined to give you the awareness of
when your body is most fertile. As you
become familiar with your body’s
ovulation and fertile window, it provides
you the opportunity to abstain from
sexual intercourse or use a barrier
method during that time.

Calendar Method (Rhythm

Method)

The rhythm method of birth

control, also known as natural
family planning or fertility
awareness, is the process of
tracking your monthly menstrual
cycle to help you either avoid
pregnancy or become pregnant.
Calendar Method (Rhythm Method)
Using the traditional calendar rhythm method involves these steps

 Record the length of six to 12 of your menstrual cycles. Using a calendar,

write down the number of days in each menstrual cycle counting from the
first day of your period to the first day of your next period.

 Determine the length of your shortest menstrual cycle. Subtract 18 from

the total number of days in your shortest cycle. This number represents the
first fertile day of your cycle.

 Determine the length of your longest menstrual cycle. Subtract 11 from

the total number of days in your longest cycle. This number represents the
last fertile day of your cycle.

 Plan sex carefully during fertile days. If you're hoping to avoid pregnancy,
unprotected sex is off-limits during your fertile days every month.

 Update your calculations every month. Continue recording the length of your
menstrual cycles to make sure you're properly determining your fertile days.

Basal Body Temperature

Some women choose the basal

body temperature method
because they do not want to
take medications or hormones
for birth control. In some
cases, people use the method
for religious reasons.
How does the basal body temperature
method work?
To use the basal body temperature method:

• Make sure you have a thermometer that measures temperatures to at least

one-tenth of a degree.

• Take your basal temperature at the same time every day.

• Measure the temperature from the same place every day.

• Record the temperature each day. Use a graph, list, or fertility-tracking app
that allows you to compare each day’s temperature.

• Identify a temperature increase. Basal body temperature typically rises less

than ½ of a degree Fahrenheit after ovulation.

• Consider the fertile period, You are most likely to get pregnant during the
period spanning 2 days before and 3 days after ovulation.

Cervical Mucus Method

The cervical mucus method is a

technique used in natural family
planning. It involves tracking
changes in your cervical mucus
(fluid discharged by the lower
part of the uterus). This fluid
protects sperm when it travels
through a woman’s reproductive
system to meet an egg.
How does the cervical mucus
method work?
The amount, color, and texture of a woman’s cervical mucus change during her
menstrual cycle. The changes are more noticeable around ovulation. To use the
cervical mucus method:

● Check your cervical mucus every day.

● Collect discharge from your underwear.

● Record the description. Track your finding on a chart, list or fertility tracking app
so you can compare each day’s findings. The typical phases of cervical mucus
quality during the cycle includes:

● Plan sex with the fertile period in mind. Your most fertile days are the days with
the clear, slippery and stretchy cervical mucus.

 Douching.
 Having sex.
 Having an infection in the vagina.
 Taking certain medications.
