Cat® 6020B – Main pumps - allocation Service Training
The bar combining stick/bucket and stick/boom indicates the circuits are in parallel. This process is used for multiple
implement movements.
NOTE: The chart above shows the functions that each pump controls. The illustration above shows the flow from each
main pump into the main control valves. The specific attachment control is determined inside the main control valves.

Cat® 6020B – Main control valve - schematic (LH or RH) Service Training
The boom and the stick are in parallel. If the boom or stick spool is moved to a blocked position, they are in
parallel and still have flow to the other function.
When the bucket spool moves from neutral, the oil flow to the other functions is blocked.

Cat® 6020B – Condition: Boom Up (Single Movement) Service Training
With 100% speed request, the maximum electric current (mA) arrives at proportional solenoid valves (1) in
the attachment pilot manifold .
A 507 psi (35 bar) pilot pressure is supplied to the boom valve spool the left and right main control valves.
The spools are shifted into the fully open position.
The full oil flow from the main pumps flows through the secondary relief and anti-cavitation block , then
straight through the boom float valve , to the piston side of boom cylinders.

21
Cat® 6020B – Condition: Boom Up (Single Movement) Service Training
Pilot oil arrives at main valves blocks via hoses the pilot line which moves the spools, and thus opens the
passages to the cylinders
22
Cat® 6020B – Condition: Boom Up (Single Movement) Service Training
Hydraulic oil flows from the main control valves to the secondary relief and anti-cavitation block .
When the boom spools are shifted, high pressure oil supply’s hydraulic oil to the cylinders.
At the same time, the boom spools open a passage where low pressure oil is allowed to return from the
cylinders to the Hydraulic tank.

and anti-cavitation
block
23
Cat® 6020B – Condition: Boom Up (Single Movement) Service Training
The secondary relief and anti-cavitation block combines the inputs from the main control valves into one
common passage with two outputs .
The hydraulic oil flows from these common outputs to the left and right cylinders on the boom. The process
of creating a common passage is a pressure equalizing function. No matter which of the main pumps supply
the hydraulic oil to the cylinder, the result will be equalized pressure beyond the secondary relief and anti-
cavitation valve block.
The hydraulic oil flows from the secondary relief and anti-cavitation block and passes through boom float
valve.
The secondary relief and anti-cavitation block contains a common return for either boom up or boom down.
This is not a connection to the cylinders, but a return for the anti-cavitation and secondary relief.
24
Cat® 6020B – Condition: Boom Up (Single Movement) Service Training
Hydraulic oil from the secondary relief and anti-cavitation block passes straight through the boom float valve
to the boom cylinders via high pressure lines in order to extend the cylinders and bring the boom to an up
position.
Hydraulic oil returns from the boom cylinders and the return oil combines into one passage within the
secondary relief and anti-cavitation block, where it is then returned to the tank through the return hoses.

27
Cat® 6020B – Boom Down (Float) Service Training
When the right joystick is moved to the forward position, depending on the speed requested, a mA signal
arrives at proportional solenoid valve (-2KH27) in the attachment pilot manifold .
A variable pilot pressure up to 507 psi (35 bar) is supplied to the boom float valve.
The boom float valve spool is shifted to a position that connects the cylinder piston side to the cylinder rod
side, and the tank allowing the oil from the piston side to fill the rod side.
The oil volume in the piston side is larger than the rod side thus; some oil flows to the tank.

Cat® 6020B – Condition: Boom Down (Floating) Service Training
Pressure less lowering of boom Saves energy Cylinders can be retracted without activating the
pumps
•Accelerates cycle times Lowering via the float valve is faster than lowering by pump pressure
•During retraction of cylinders via float valve the pump flow can be used for other cylinder motions

Cat® 6020B – Condition: Boom Power Down Service Training
While the right joystick lever function is pushed all the way forward and the right button pressed this
(cancels the float function) for the boom power down function.
The following main pumps are used for boom power down (for maximum speed):
• Main pumps 2 and 6: If the swing function is not requested
• Main pump 2: If the swing function is requested at the same time as boom down. Main pump 6 is used for
the swing function.
NOTE: For boom power down (single movement), main pump four will not supply oil.

Module Conclusion
This presentation has provided information for the hydraulic attachments system of the 6020B
Hydraulic Mining Shovel.
When used in conjunction with the service manual, the information in this package should aid the
technician in analysing a problem in these systems.
For service repairs, adjustments, and maintenance, always refer to the Operation and Maintenance
Manual, Service Manuals, and other related service publications.
