Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature
Introduction:
A thorough review of the current pandemic landscape, including the emergence and spread of COVID-19
and other pandemics throughout history, is given of this study. The chapter addresses the effectiveness
of various preventive measures, including social withdrawal, hand cleanliness, and the use of face masks,
and it explores the many pandemic transmission types, including airborne, droplet, and contact
transmission. The use of face masks as a preventive tool against pandemics is the specific emphasis of
this chapter, which also highlights the scientific data that supports their efficacy. The chapter also looks
at the different kinds of face masks that are available, their components, and suggested usage guidelines.
The findings from this chapter will serve as a firm foundation for the upcoming chapter, which will
examine how well face masks work to stop the transmission of disease.
Globally, the COVID-19 epidemic has posed previously unheard-of difficulties. Utilizing face masks is one
of the most efficient strategies to stop the infection from spreading. The objective of this study is to
carry out a qualitative investigation of how well face masks protect against viruses.
Methodology The PubMed and PNAS databases were used to conduct a systematic review. The inclusion
criteria were research published between 2019 and 2023 that focused on the effectiveness of face masks
against viruses. The search terms used were "face mask," "virus," and "effectiveness." This review
covered a total of 4 studies.
Results This review's studies found that face masks are efficient at stopping the spread of viruses. Face
masks were shown to be 79% efficient in limiting the spread of SARS-CoV-2 if they were used by all
household members before symptoms appeared, according to a qualitative investigation carried out in
Beijing households 1. The World Health Organization-sponsored another comprehensive analysis
discovered that using a face mask "could result in a large reduction in risk of infection." 1. Wearing a
surgical face mask over the mouth and nose is a successful strategy to lower the prevalence of COVID-19
in public settings, according to a sizable randomized trial conducted by scientists at Stanford Medicine
and Yale University 2.
Conclusion Face masks are successful at stopping the spread of viruses, according to the results of this
qualitative research literature review. The incidence of COVID-19 in public places can be decreased by
covering the mouth and nose with a surgical face mask. The efficiency of various types of masks against
various types of viruses needs to be further investigated.
