5 Curvilinear Motion Rectangular Components MAE272

Saturday, August 8, 2020 3:29 PM

Objectives:
1. Describe the motion of a particle traveling along a curved path.
2. Relate kinematic quantities in terms of the rectangular
components of the vectors.

If you are designing the track, why

is it important to be able to predict
the acceleration of the car?

Position vector MAE272
Friday, August 14, 2020 1:57 PM

It is often convenient to describe the motion of a particle in

terms of its x, y, z or rectangular components, relative to a
fixed frame of reference.

The position of the particle

can be defined at any instant
by the position vector

The x, y, z-components may

all be functions of time, i.e.,
x = x(t), y = y(t), and z = z(t) .

The acceleration vector is the time derivative of the velocity

vector (second derivative of the position vector).

Given: The box slides down the slope described by the

equation y = (0.05x2) m, where x is in meters.
vx = -3 m/s, ax = -1.5 m/s2 at x = 5 m.

Find: The y components of the velocity and the acceleration

of the box at x = 5 m.

Example 2 MAE272

Given: The particle travels along the path y = 0.5 x2. When t =
0, x = y = z = 0.
Find: The particle’s distance and the magnitude of its
acceleration when t = 1 s, if vx = (5 t) ft/s, where t is in seconds.
