LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
Learning Area: Science Quarter First
Week 1 Day 1
Lesson Title/ Changes between liquids and solids through the process of melting using
Topic: diagrams and flowcharts.
Name Grade and 6
Section:
Title and No. of Activity: Changes between liquids and solids through the process of melting
using diagrams and flowcharts
Objective:
Describe changes between liquids and solids through the process of melting using
diagrams and flowcharts.
Materials Needed: The materials needed in this activity are the following:
• paper, ballpen, notebook
ice cube
Duration: 40-45 minutes
Instruction:
Follow the instructions in every task carefully. Read the questions carefully on each task
before answering. Write your answers on the answer sheet provided. Answer all the given
tasks.
Tasks
Task 1: In the previous lesson, you were taught about matter and its phases, right? Solids are
materials where molecules are intact and have a definite shape and volume that you can touch
and hold. While liquid has no definite volume and shape that’s why it will just follow the shape
of the container. Gas has molecules that are very far from each other. It has no definite shape
and volume. Identify whether the picture shows solid, liquid, or gas. Write your answer in your
notebook.

Task 2: Read the given piece and match the meaning of the underlined words below then use
them in sentences as you use them in your daily lives.
Materials have three physical states: solid, liquid and gas.
Solids have definite volume and shape because molecules are packed closely together. They
seem to move or vibrate back and forth in only one fixed position. The force that holds the
molecules of solid is very strong. Their movement is very limited, or they only vibrate back and
forth, which is why solids have definite shape and volume.
Liquids have definite volume but no definite shape and take the shape of the container. In
liquids, molecules are loosely packed and have spaces in between. So, the molecules can roll,
glide, and take the shape of the container. The molecules of liquid are slightly apart from each
other, so they flow freely. The forces in molecules of liquid are not as strong as solid.
Gases have no definite shape and volume. Molecules of gases are far from each other. They
constantly move in all directions. They fill the shape of the container. The force between the
molecules of gas is weak. This explains that gases have neither definite volume nor shape.
Task 2.A. Match the meaning of the words in column A to column B. Write the letter of
the correct answer before the number.
A B
1. volume A. without change
2. Molecules B. easy flow or movement
3. Packed C. amount of space occupied by a
three- dimensional object.
4. glide D. compressed.
5. constantly E. smallest particle of an element
Task 2.B. Since you have already known the meaning of these words, try to use them in
sentences as you use them in your daily lives.
1. volume
2. molecules
3. packed
4. glide
5. constantly
Task 3: Perform the following tasks and answer the given questions.
What to use:
ice cube
ballpen
paper
timer
What to do:
1. Place the ice cube on a platter.
2. Observe what happens to the ice cube after 3-5 minutes.
Task Questions:
1. What material was used in your activity?
2. What do you know about ice/ice cube?
3. Where is ice found?
4. What can we do to an ice cube to make it a liquid?
5. What happened to the ice cube after 3-5 minutes?
Task 4: Read and study the illustrations below then answer the questions that follow. Write your
answer in your notebook.
An ice cube melting into liquid water is a familiar example of the process of melting. It melts even
at a room temperature.

Another common example is melting butter in a hot pan. In this example, the butter
requires a higher temperature in order to melt compared to ice cube. Melting helps us to
organize the material for further processing.

Task Questions:
1. What do you call the process by which a substance changes from the solid phase to the
liquid phase?
2. What is the other term for melting?
3. How does melting occur?
4. Which do you think will melt first: an ice cube exposed under the sun, or an ice cube
wrapped with towel? Why do you say so?
5. Aside from ice cubes and butter, what other solid materials can be melted?
Assessment
Instructions: Read the situation carefully then choose the statement that would describe the
changes that will happen to the material. Write the letter on a separate sheet of paper.
1. It was brown out, Daniel decided to use candle. What will happen to the candle after
several minutes of using?
a. The candle will stay the same.
b. The candle will change in color and size.
c. The candle slowly melts but maintains its appearance.
d. The candle slowly melts and changes its appearance.
2. Dan got a bottle of soft drinks from a
freezer, he noticed that it has ice inside it. What must Dan do so that he can drink all the
content of the bottle?
a. waits until the ice melt.
b. returns the bottle of soft drinks to the freezer and wait for 3 minutes.
c. place the bottle of soft drinks in a Styrofoam.
d. place the bottle of soft drinks in a cooler.
3. Mother decided to use molasses instead of brown sugar in her native kakanin, so she
added the molasses in a boiling milk of coconut. What will happen to the solid molasses
after few minutes of boiling?
a. The molasses will become sweeter.
b. The molasses will be hardened.
c. The molasses will melt and easily be mixed with the kakanin.
d. The molasses will be hardened first then melt after it is mixed with the kakanin.
For items 4-7: Based on the statement/diagram, describe the changes happened between them.
Write your answer on your answer sheet.
4. A spoonful of sugar is added in a cup of hot water.
5. Mother decided to fry egg, but she found out that the bottled cooking oil is hardened due
to very cold weather. She decided to expose the bottle near the fire.
6. Lyn bought a box of ice cream from the market which is 30-minute ride from home.
7. A margarine was put on a hot pan.
For items 8-10: Based on the diagram below, describe the changes happened next to the given
material. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
