Simulation Experiment #1
Waves
(Wave on String)
I. Objective:
To be able to observe relationships between frequency, wavelength, speed of waves in a
rope, and observe how these change with changing tension in the rope.
V. PROCEDURE:
A - Speed of wave and tension
1. Set to Pulse; Fixed End; Damping = None; Normal; Tension = Low
2. Turn the Ruler and Timer on
3. Use the ruler to measure the length of the piece of string.
4. Click the button on the pulse generator to send a pulse through the rope
5. Use the timer to measure how long it takes for the pulse to travel back and forth 5 time.
6. Repeat on moderate and High tension
7. Record all the data in Table 1.
B - Relationship between wavelength and frequency
1. Set to Oscillate and No End
2. Keep the ruler and timer on
3. Set the frequency to 1 and tension to low
4. Measure the time it takes for a wave to travel the length of the string and record it to table 2.
5. Measure the length of a single wave length and record it to table 2.
6. Do the same measurements at Frequency = 2 and 3
7. Repeat the experiment at moderate and high tension
VI. DATA AND RESULTS:

VI. QUESTION AND ANSWER:
1. In table 1, how does tension affect the speed of a wave in a rope?
The tension helps to increase their speed. The higher the tension, the faster it is to travel.
2. In table 2, if the tension remains constant and the frequency increases, what happens to the
wavelength?
The wavelengths are decreasing as the tensions and frequencies are increasing.
3. In table 2, is there any pattern in the last two columns of the table (speed and Frequency X
wavelength)?
The patterns are their speed are base on each length divided by its time and the last column are its
frequency is multiplied by its wavelength. Same goes to the following rows.
4. In table 2, what is the relationship between frequency, wavelength and speed of a wave?
They're the results of changing tensions and frequencies from low to high and from 1 to 3.
VII. CONCLUSION:
Changing tensions and frequencis means changing also its time, wavelengths, and speed of
waves in the rope. Wave is a disturbance which travels to a medium in which energy travels
to another location from where it started.
