ELICIT 5 minutes
A. Reviewing previous
lesson or presenting the Activity 1 Play that EM Spectrum
new lesson
1. Show the class the animated Electromagnetic Spectrum. Then, ask the following questions:
Group 1 – How the EM Waves in the EM Spectrum are arranged?
Group 2 – Which of the EM Waves has the lowest frequency? Highest frequency?
Group 3 – Which of the EM Waves has the shortest wavelength? Longest wavelength?
Group 4 – What are the properties of EM Waves?

ENGAGE 10 minutes

B. Establishing a purpose Activity 2 Guessing Game

for the lesson
1. Show the class different materials that use EM Waves.
2. Call a member of each group to GUESS what type of EM Wave is use by the material shown to
them.
3. The following materials to be guessed by the learners:
- Handset radio
- Cellular phone
- TV Remote Control
- Light Bulb
- X-Ray Film
- Infrared Body Temperature Scanner
C. Presenting
examples/instances of Tell the learners the materials are only some the technologies that uses EM Waves.
the new lesson Present the lesson objective.

EXPLORE 30 minutes

D. Discussing new (10 minutes)

concepts and practicing Activity 3. Applications of EM Waves
new skills #1
Let the learners perform Activity 3 by group.
Remind the learners that their performance will be assessed using a Rubric:
RUBRIC
10pts – complete answers and all are correct
9 pts
Each – complete
group answers
will be assigned but of
2 type 2 are incorrect
EM Waves.
8 pts – complete answers but 3 are incorrect
7 pts – complete answers but 4 are incorrect
6 pts – complete answers but 5 are incorrect
5 pts – incomplete answers with more than 5 incorrect answer
Time limit: 10 minutes

Each group will be divided into two groups.

An animation of EM Waves with examples of their application will be played using LED TV. It will
be their springboard in answering the activity.
The learners will complete the paragraph about the applications EM Waves assigned to their
group.
Each group will be given a printed copy of the paragraph with clue words.
Answers will be written on a manila paper and to be posted on the board for checking.
In checking the output of every group, a member of each group will click the “show answer “
button to check how many correct answers they got.
The following task each group to be answered:

Group 1 – Applications of Radio Wave and Visible Light

Group 2 – Applications of Microwaves and Infrared

Group 3 – Applications of Ultraviolet Ray

Group 4 – Applications of X-Ray and Gamma Ray

(10minutes)
The teacher formally provides explanations, uses student’s previous knowledge as a basis for
explaining concepts and encourages students to explain in their own.
The learners listen to other’s explanations, record, and make connections to previous
knowledge.
E. Discussing new (10 minutes)
concepts and practicing Activity 4 – Show Me the Wave
new skills #2
Teacher will show the class an illustration on how endoscope and X-Ray work using
visible light and X-ray waves, respectively.
Let each group share their ideas on how the equipment functions.

EXPLAIN 5 minutes
F. Developing mastery Activity 5 - Name that Wave
(leads to Formative Students will give the NAME of the EM Wave used by the different technologies shown
Assessment 3) to them.

ELABORATE 10 minutes
G. Finding practical Activity 6 – Encounter with the Wave
applications of
concepts and skills in What type of electromagnetic waves do you ENCOUNTER daily?
daily living

H. Making generalizations Activity 7 – Wrap Up the Wave

and abstractions about
the lesson Let the students complete the table below by choosing the correct answer from the given
choices.

EM WAVE APPLICATION/USE
Radio Wave (Radio and television communication)
Microwave (Satellite television and communication)
(Remote control, household electrical appliances,
Infrared
security systems )
(Artificial lighting, optical fibers in medical uses, screen
Visible Light
of electronic devices)

Ultraviolet Ray (Sterilization, Fluorescence)

X-Ray (Medical use, engineering applications)

Gamma Ray (Medical treatment, sterilization)

EVALUATE 5 minutes
I. Evaluating learning Activity 8 – The Final Wave

Group Evaluation. Rubrics will be used in scoring.

7 - 8 correct answers – 5 points
5 - 6 correct answers – 4 points
3 - 4 correct answers – 3 points
1 - 2 correct answers – 2 points

The learners’ knowledge will be evaluated by answering 8 questions. Each group will write their answer
on a piece of paper. They will be given only 10 seconds to answer every question.

1. Which of the following has the shortest wavelength?

A. Gamma Rays B. Microwaves C. Infrared D. X-Rays
2. Which of the following is used to look at bones?
A. Microwaves B. Gamma Rays C. Radio Waves D. X-Rays
3. Radio, Microwaves, Infrared, Light, Ultraviolet, X-Rays and Gamma Rays are all
_______________ waves?
4. Is the following statement True or False?
All electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed (the speed of light) in a vacuum.
5. Which of the following causes your skin to produce melanin?
A. Microwaves B. Gamma Rays C. X-Rays D. Ultraviolet
6. Which of the following is used in cooking and mobile phone networks?
A. Infrared B. X-Rays C. Microwaves D. Radio Waves

7. ____________ can cause cancer but can also be used to treat cancer?
8. Is the following statement True or False?
Radio waves have the highest frequency of all electromagnetic waves.

EXTEND
