Lab Experiment 2 – Transistors as Amplifiers

and Switches

I. Introduction and Goals

The student will get acquainted with different transistor configurations such as the Common Emitter and Common Base.
He will learn to use the transistor as a digital switch.

II. Material list

- 3 NPN Power Bipolar Transistors

- Datasheet of the chosen transistor
- Resistances of 1KΩ, 4.3 KΩ, 350 Ω, 30 KΩ, 100 Ω, 5 KΩ, 100 KΩ

III. Experiment

Include transistor characterization (characteristic curves).

Exercise 1.
Calculate experimentally the β of the transistor.

Obtain the characteristic curves of the chosen transistor (IC vs. VCE). Build the circuit of the Figure.

1.- Fix the voltage VBB in 2 Volts.

2.- Perform two DC sweeps for VCC. From 0 a 2 V with 0.1 V steps, and from 2 to 10 V with 1 V steps.

3.- Repeat step 2 for a VBB voltage of 2.5 and 3 V.

4.- Compare the obtained graphics with the datasheet of the transistor provided by the manufacturer and conclude.

Exercise 2.
Build the Amplifier Circuit in Common Emitter configuration.

Using an input of mV in small signal, measure the following:

- The gain of the circuit.
- The maximum possible voltage at the input before getting a saturation in the output signal.
- The frequency response of the circuit.

Input and output impedances.

Exercise 3.
Build the Follower Circuit in Common Base configuration.

Using an input of 200 mV, measure the following:

- The gain of the circuit.
- Its frequency response.

Exercise 4.
Build the circuit of the following Figure. It is a transistor operating as a switch.

Perform a sweep in frequency to watch the circuit’s frequency response.
