III. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
Bias is when the human’s mind imposes judgements or in favor in a subjective way that tells only
one side of a story. When we favor or dislike something or someone then it is a bias.
It is basically when an author displays a prejudice against someone that reflects his or her choice
of words or tone of voice that is not fair
Each of us from a different culture or background may have different biases which based from our
opinions and outlooks about our own life. So, we should learn to respect those biases and not always try
to prove that our biases are the only ones to have.
Objectives:
a. identify the author’s biases in given statements;
b. examine statements which are biased; and
c. recognize biases of the author in a certain issue.
Author’s bias can be recognized by looking for certain problems with their statements which include:
a. Using emotional or loaded statements
b. Using overstatements or exaggerations
c. Using opinions rather than facts
d. Using broad, sweeping statements or generalizations
e. Using statistics
A. Using emotional or loaded statements
“Loaded words” is a verbal and written communication that elicit a gives emotive language and
emotional response from the reader or listener.

B. Using overstatements or exaggerations
Exaggeration or overstatement is used to lay emphasis and stress on the given idea, action, feature, or

C. Using opinions rather than facts
An opinion is what you think or believe that can't be proven that reflects an author`s or a writer`s personal
point of view, belief, perspective, feeling and value towards an issue or topic.

D. Using broad, sweeping statements or generalizations
A generalization is a broad statement or an idea that is applied to a group of people or things.

E. Using statistics
Numbers and statistics are manipulated by the writer to change the way we think about the topic or issue.

Activity 1.
Directions: Identify what did the writer/author use to show bias in the following statements. Write the letter of
your answer in a separate sheet of paper.
