• Preamble: IISER, Tirupati is an Institute of National
Importance and established by the Ministry of
Human Resource Development, in order to promote
Higher Scientific Learning and Research as well as
Scientific Exploration at the Undergraduate and
Postgraduate levels of education and to create
Scientists and Academicians of the highest quality.
IISERs are destined to become Science Institutions of
the highest caliber
• Architectural Concepts and Constructability: Such institutes
need pleasing, soothing, creative and inspiring ambiance;
and infrastructure shall be able to create such atmosphere.
The conceptualized Infrastructure shall be awe inspiring but
not overpowering. M/s Arcop Associates, Lead Consultant
Architects for the project, tried to do the same. Their
concepts for main buildings are unique and Geometric
Modernism dominates their conceptual development.
Circles, semi-circles, triangles etc are the signature themes
in some of the main structures. Moreover, there are large
column free spaces and large areas of fair finish concrete.
Knowledge Resource Center & Lecture hall buildings are
remarkable and intricate in their concept, but structurally
very complicated, requires special formwork, highly skillful
execution, and meticulous planning. Knowledge Resource
Center appear to be Architects' signature building. The
intricacy of design can be gauged by the voluminous
detailed drawings.
• Architectural arrangement & layout: Generally
geometrics are used to determine the
proportions of a building, to create
symmetrical and asymmetrical forms, and to
plan spatial arrangements and circulation
patterns. The architect has designed a
rectangular column free building of 52m x
32.5m floor plate with few circular & semi-
circular shear wall shafts and large column
free space. It has three floors. Ground floor
caters to library reception partly and
remaining area is break out space and path
way. First floor is partly double height. Shafts
are meant for service corridors.
• It is placed opposite to main gate as drop off
and gateway to the Academic, Lecture hall,
Administration and Auditorium buildings

• Structural Arrangement and Layout:
The structural general arrangement of all slabs is a grid
floor system with 1.20m deep post-tensioned beams
supported majorly on 1.20m deep drop panels around
circular shafts. The entire building is with exposed fair
face concrete.
UTROCON is the specialized agency for PT works. 3S &
5S tendons with HT strand of 12.7mm dia procured
from DP wires Ltd are used. There is good amount of
reinforcement and almost 1000 cum of concrete of
M50 grade. Self Compacting Concrete is used
because of rebar & PT tendon congestion. Rebars are
of Fe 550 D from JSW. SCC is designed with 450 kgs of
cement & 140 kgs of flyash. Segregation ratio is below
6% and Viscosity is 5 sec.

DOKA FAIR FINISH FORMWORK SCHEME
FOR CIRCULAR SHAFTS
• DOKA:A Specialized formwork from Austria. Study,
design using H beams, Whalers, jacks etc
• Concrete is placed up to height of 4.9m in single pour to
avoid cold joints.
• As such , designed to withstand the tremendous lateral
thrust of self compacting concrete with a design flow of
700 and viscosity of 5 seconds.
• Film coated 18mm thick Birch Ply is used in general. For
circular elements, Medium Density Overlay (MDO) is
used which allows bending to required degree without
breaking.
• Shutter vibration with Wooden Mallets is adopted.
• Curing of Vertical surfaces is done with wet gunny bags.
