Paragraph Writing

Pointers
Descriptive paragraph

Start a descriptive paragraph with a simple topic sentence that describes your scene, character, or
situation. Then, focus on what will draw the reader in. Maybe that's a smell, sound, or feeling.
End the paragraph with a concluding thought or observation.
Note: Write a single paragraph of 150 words.
Do not write it in the form of a story.
Describe the topic in general purview excluding your experience with it.
Strong Opening Sentence: Begin with a compelling opening sentence that grabs the
reader's attention and sets the tone for the paragraph.

Sensory Details: Use the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch) to describe the
subject. This helps create a vivid picture in the reader's mind.

Specific and Concrete Language: Avoid vague descriptions. Use specific, concrete details to
give a clear and precise image.
Use Figurative Language: Incorporate metaphors, similes, and other figurative language to
add depth and creativity to your descriptions.

Focus on the Dominant Impression: Maintain a clear focus on the main impression or
feeling you want to convey about the subject.

Organized Structure: Arrange the details logically, whether spatially, chronologically, or by

importance, to ensure the paragraph flows smoothly.

Vary Sentence Structure: Use a mix of short and long sentences to keep the paragraph
interesting and avoid monotony.

Use Strong Adjectives and Verbs: Choose descriptive adjectives and strong, active verbs to
enhance the vividness of your descriptions.

Concluding Sentence: End with a sentence that reinforces the main impression or
summarizes the key details, providing a satisfying conclusion.

Topic: A Rainy Day in the City

The city looks different on a rainy day. Streets glisten with reflections from neon lights, creating a
kaleidoscope of colors on the wet pavements and roads. The rhythmic patter of raindrops on
rooftops and windows provides a soothing soundtrack, contrasting with the usual hustle and bustle.
Umbrellas of all hues cover the sidewalks, adding splashes of color against the gray sky. People
move briskly, their footsteps splashing in the water. The air is filled with the fresh, earthy scent of
rain. Puddles form on the mud giving a mirror effect. The trees around the city look greener with
their dust washed away. The rain cleans away the grime of the city, leaving it refreshed and
renewed, offering a moment of tranquility amidst the chaos.
