Fatalities in Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs)
A key development challenge impairing young & productive population in developing economies
Fatalities in Road Traffic Injuries (RTIs) Challenges
#8 cause of death • Economic cost: $ 1.7 Tn ✓ Under-reporting: The actual
Global (6.5 % of global GDP) burden of road crashes is
1.35 Mn lives lost unknown.

Diagnosis of Road Safety
India’s Road Profile
• Transports >60% of all goods
• 2nd largest road network across the world - 6.2 million Km
• Transports 85% of total passenger traffic.
• 5% of the total road network are highways
Categorization of reasons for road crashes
• Over-speeding, overloading, wrong lane driving, signal jumping,
>84% Human errors • Stress, fatigue, Poor driving skills, non-awareness of rules
• No Helmet, Seatbelt
Road design • Black spots due to poor engineering
errors • improper entry-exit to highways
• lack of signals, road markings, zebra crossing
• Vehicle manufacturing
Vehicle issues
• Lack of safety features in vehicles
Good post-accident care along the highways would also have a high impact on saving lives.

Reasons for Road Accidents & ITS Solution
➢ Over speeding
➢ Speed Enforcement Systems
➢ Vehicle Parked in no parking zones
➢ Video Incident Detection System
➢ Wrong way driving
➢ Enforcement System
➢ Not following Traffic Rules
➢ Lane Change Detection System
➢ Heavy Vehicle in Wrong lane
➢ AI Camera Enforcement System
➢ Lane change in accident zone
➢ Improvement of road sign and alert
➢ Triple Riding, Usage of cell phone systems
while driving, Not wearing seat belt
➢ Low Visibility & No Proper Warning

Four measurable factors
Among many factors contributing to road injuries and deaths four risk factors have a significantly measurable effect
1·4 million As per the WHO report According to a study published
people die each in “The Lancet Health Journal”
year, and up to 04 measurable risk factors
50 million are At least 30,000 lives in India could have
injured by • Speeding, been saved just by the implementation of
RTIs. simple road safety measures to prevent
• Drunk driving, careless driving these four.
• Non-use of Helmet, and
Road accidents ➔ 20,554 lives - by checking the speed,
reduce • Non-use of Seatbelt or child ➔ 5,683 lives - by wearing helmets and
countries' restraint. ➔ 3,204 lives - by use of seatbelts
annual GDP ➔ No data for Drunk & careless driving
by a range of
1–3%
Good post-accident care along the highways would also have a high impact on saving lives.

Video Incident Detection
– Smart Area
Surveillance
• Video Incident detection Systems allows to
understand traffic violations which cause hindrance to
proper vehicle movement and there by causing
accidents
• The set of analytics include
• Parking In no parking zone
• Wrong way driving
• Stopped Vehicle
• Congestion alert
• Heavy Vehicle on fast lane
• Lane Straddling

Case study : EPE
The Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) is a part of the Peripheral Expressway Project which includes Western
Peripheral Expressway (WPE) and EPE, connecting NH-1 and NH-2 from western and eastern side of Delhi
Prior to installation of ITS on EPE
• 38.3 % over speeding incidents
observed
• Speed as high as 245 Kmph was
observed
• Wrong parking of vehicles on EW
• Incidents of snatching/robbery
• No emergency support in case of
breakdown or accidents

Leveraging technologies to save lives on Indian roads and developing a human-centric road ecosystems
Road Safety 2.0 : Theory of change
Encourage technology adoption in the entire road safety ecosystem;
Leveraging
technologies in the Integrate all road related Databases to a single Blockchain platform to
entire chain of ensure transparency, authenticity, and traceability;
road ecosystem
➔Drivers Enforcement by encouragement by self-motivation
➔Vehicle
➔Road Converting safe driving behaviour into measurable scores (SDS) using IoT
➔Emergency
care & SDS should be popularized and mandated like CIBIL scores
Insurance
Settlement More focus on Rewarding good than identifying punishing bad
➔Enforcement
Link SDS with Insurance,, fuel, vehicle workshop and wayside amenities
Technology can
compensate for ADAS in the vehicles, Star rating of vehicles on safety measures;
human
