1 Hello everyone
My name’s Nguyen Kim Quy. I’m incharge of instructing you in this
subject: advanced reading. You must complete the subjects Reading -
Writing 1, 2, 3, and 4 before enrolling this course. Our course lasts 8
weeks. We also have three sessions which are video conferences.
2 I will give you some information about course description, course
objectives, course requirements and and expectations, student evaluation,
final exam policy, the outline of the reading test, the required course
book and reference books.
3 This course helps you build your English vocabulary and reading skills
through 8 reading selections and accompanying exercises. These reading
selections are about different topics such as linguistics, sociology, media
studies, international relations, urban planning, ecology, psychology, and
health sciences.
In addidtion, you are going to read 16 passages and 160 accompanying
questions dealing with a variety of topics like the natural sciences, the
social sciences, history, culture, and the arts.
4 People learn to read by reading. Therefore, this course helps you develop
and improve reading skills. Emphasis is on identifying the main idea and
supporting ideas; recognizing the author’s purpose and point of view;
guessing the meanings of new words by using context analysis, structure
analysis, or footnotes; locating referents; making inferences; and thinking
critically.
5 In order to succeed in this course, you should prepare new lessons before
the teacher gives answers and explanation. Additionally, you are required
to participate in class discussion. Furthermore, you have to do all assigned
readings..
6 For the successful completion of this course. You should meet these
requirements. Participating in discussion accounts for 5 % . This means
that each student has to post his answers to the questions on the discussion
forum. Q online practice makes up another 10 %, so you should use the
access code to register for your Q online practice account. Doing unit
tests accounts for 10%. Doing all assigned readings from the textbook
accounts for 10%. Answering your instructor’s questions during the
video conference accounts for 5 % . The final exam makes up 60%.
