Inform Learners of objectives
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
Cognitive:
1. Identify the factors or causes of plate movements.
2. Describe geological events and geological features that occur during plate
movements.
Affective:
3. Appreciate the importance of plate movements in creating features of the earth
Psychomotor:
4. Create an awareness talk regarding disasters that commonly hit the Philippines.

Plate Boundaries
What happens at plate boundaries?
The interaction of plate boundaries is responsible for many geologic features of
earth. For example, sections of Earth’s crust can come together and collide, spread apart,
or slide past one another. Each of these types of plate boundaries is associated with
different geological features.
There are 3 forces that cause the plates of the earth to move.
These are:
1. Convection current
2. Ridge push
3. Slab pull

lates move because of the intense heat in the Earth’s core that causes the
molten material to move.
Convection is the circulation of material caused by differences in
density. Hot material rises upward and comes in contact with the
Earth’s crust. As materials cools, it becomes dense and sinks and

in the asthenosphere act like a
conveyor belt floating where the in
moving the lithosphere above. The
connection the current is like the water that drives the boat towards its
direction. Earth’s plate moves because the lithosphere “floats” on the
asthenosphere.
Convection current drives other forces that move plate. As it rises, it creates a
ridge pull on the midge-ocean and as it sinks, it creates a slab pull near
trenches.
Ridge
push
happens when the molten material in
the mantle rises and creates
potential force causing the plates to
move away from the ridge. That
force created is ridge push. Gravity
pulls the surrounding rocks down
away from the ridge.

force that acts when a slab, dense plate sinks and gravity pulls on the rest of the
plate. It occurs more when convection is sinking to too cooler and denser
material. As it sinks, it takes the older crust with it.
Remember that…
Trench is a deep area in the ocean
floor between 2 plates where
subduction is occurring and
Subduction zone is a location where
one plate is being pulled down into the
mantle, melted and recycled.
How did you find the

Synthesis
Here are the module’s key ideas:
● Convection is the circulation of material caused by differences in density. Hot
material rises upward and comes in contact with the Earth’s crust.
Subductions happens when the colder and denser oceanic plate sinks below
the continental plate into the mantle.
● Ridge push happens when the molten material in the mantle rises and
creates potential force causing the plates to move away from the ridge.
● Slab pull force that acts when a slab, dense plate sinks and gravity pulls on
the rest of the plate. It occurs more when convection is sinking to too cooler
and denser material.

Plates move because of the intense heat in the Earth’s core that causes the molten
material to move. Hot material rises upward and comes in contact with the Earth’s
crust. As materials cools, it becomes dense and sinks creating (1) .
It moves like a conveyor belt moving the (2) . Plates then move away
from the (3) with a force called (4) .
Gravity pulls the surrounding rocks to pull and away from the ridge.
(5) occurs to convection is sinking to cooler, more dense
materials. As it sinks, it takes with it the older and denser crust. Gravity again does
play a role that moves the plates downward.
