PREPARATION FOR SCHEDULES IN A SITE

Construction projects are notoriously difficult, and they are known for
encountering delays. They involve many moving parts, teams, equipment
and materials. Preparing a schedule for a site involves several steps that help
ensures a project is completed efficiently and effectively. This schedule
organizes activities and their sequence in a construction project. It’s a
project management process that acts as a blueprint for how the project will
be executed. It’s not only organizing activities and tasks but rather the
overall timeframe for the project, including milestones.

The following steps are always considered.

1. Identify the tasks: Break down the project into smaller, manageable
tasks. This includes;
 Site preparation ( clearing, excavation, etc)
 Foundation Work (laying foundations, etc)
 Construction (building, installing, etc)
 Finishing work (painting, flooring, etc)
 Testing and commissioning

2. Estimate Task Duration: Estimate the time required to complete

each task. Consider factors like;
 Task complexity
 Resource availability
 Weather conditions
 Site constraints
3. Determine Dependencies: Identify task dependencies and
relationships. For example;
 Task B can’t start until Task A is complete
 Task C requires input from Task B

4. Create a Timeline: Establish a project timeline, including start and

end dates by using calendar to visualize the schedules.
5. Assign Resources: Allocate personnel, equipment and materials to
each task. Ensure;
 Adequate resources for each task.
 Resource availability matches task schedules

6. Set Milestones: Define key milestones and deadlines. For example;

 Completion of foundation
 Installation of critical systems
 Final inspection and handover

7. Buffer for Contingencies: Add buffers for unexpected delays or

setbacks. Consider;
 Weather-related delays
 Unforeseen site conditions
 Resource availability issues

8. Review and Revise: Regularly review and update the schedule as

needed. Reflect changes in;
 Task duration
 Resource availability
 Site conditions
