To answer the questions in this test, figure out how the first pair of
words goes together. Then find the word that makes the next pair go
together in the same way.
Look at the first sample question below.
The first two words are right and left. Right is the opposite of left.
SAY (Pause.) Now look at the third word, over. The answer must be the
opposite of over. (Pause.) Under is the opposite of over.
Hold up your copy of the test booklet and point to the area for Test 1: Verbal
Analogies.
Fill in the circle next to under to show that under is the correct
answer to sample question 1.
Check that all students correctly answered the sample question.
Now try to answer the second sample question by yourself.
Pause while students attempt the question.
The correct answer is read. You watch TV, and you read a book.
SAY Fill in the circle next to read to show that read is the correct answer
to sample question 2.

Quantitative Battery Test 4: Number Analogies
Distribute the test booklets and a few sheets of scratch paper to each student.
Make sure each student receives the test booklet with his or her name on it.
Open your test booklet to Test 4: Number Analogies on page 15. This
SAY is a practice page.
Make sure all students have the correct page.
Read the directions silently while I read them aloud.
Let’s answer the first sample question. Look at the first two rows of
the puzzle.
There are two numbers and an arrow between them. The arrows tell
SAY us the numbers 1 and 2 follow a rule, and the numbers 3 and 4 follow
the same rule.
How do we go from 1 to 2 and from 3 to 4? (Pause.) In this puzzle, the
rule for each pair is to add 1 to the first number to get the
second number.
Now look at the third row. Follow the rule. What is the missing
number? (Pause.) The rule is to add 1. Five plus 1 equals 6, so the
missing number is 6.
Hold up your copy of the test booklet and point to the area for Test 4: Number
Analogies.
Fill in the circle under the number 6 to show that 6 is the correct
answer to sample question 1.
Check that all students correctly answered the sample question.

SAY Let’s answer the second sample question.
This is the same kind of puzzle, but now the number pairs are written
SAY in a row. What rule do the first two pairs of numbers follow? (Pause.)
In both pairs, doubling the first number gives the second
number: Doubling 1 gives 2. Doubling 2 gives 4. Using this rule,
what is the missing number in the third pair? (Pause.)
Doubling 3 gives 6. So the missing number is 6. Fill in the circle next
to 6 to show that 6 completes the third pair of numbers.
Check that all students correctly answered the sample question. Make sure they
understand what they are supposed to do.
To answer the questions in this test, figure out the rule that the first
two pairs of numbers follow. Then use that rule to find the missing
number in the third pair. Most questions use only one rule. But some
questions use two rules, such as adding and then doubling. You may
use your scratch paper to help you find the correct answer.
You will have ten minutes for this test. Try to answer every question.
If you cannot answer a question, try the next one. If there is time, go
back to the questions you skipped.

How do the pictures in the top row go together? (Pause.)
SAY
Both pictures have a triangle and a circle. In the first picture, the
circle is inside the triangle. In the second picture the circle is outside
the triangle.
Now look at the picture in the bottom row of the puzzle. (Pause.) It
shows a diamond inside a square. What should the missing picture
look like? (Pause.)
The answer should have a diamond outside a square. Fill in the circle
under the figure that shows the diamond outside of the square.
The third figure is the correct answer to sample question 2.
Check that all students correctly answered the sample question. Make sure they
understand what they are supposed to do.
