Few can deny that exercise is good for us and, maybe surprisingly, this is not a new concept. As far
back as Ancient Greece, Plato informed people that they needed to exercise if they wished to remain
healthy. And today, in the Western world, governments, worried about increasing cases of obesity, are
trying to encourage exercise and healthy eating for all. This is not out of altruism, but because
overweight people are costing governments a great deal in medical care.
A total lack of activity, which may have worked for Mark Twain, is generally not good for us, as our
bodies are built to move. Evidence proves that our memories, balance, flexibility, bone strength and
psychological health are all improved by regular exercise. So, generally speaking, without exercise
our health would be compromised in some way. More calories are burnt as we exercise, thus trimming
down and toning our bodies so that we look and feel better. Furthermore, when we exercise the body
produces endorphins, chemicals that help us to feel happier.
Plato suggested that methodical physical exercise is also necessary, and today this would mean
participating in sports regularly, going to the gym, jogging, cycling and so on. On the other hand,
there is a danger of doing too much exercise for your body, with disastrous results, so maybe Mark
Twain has a point. The question is, how serious can it be? Well, serious enough to lead to depression,
heart problems and inflammation of joints, to name but a few. Exercise can be addictive, and people
can become anxious and depressed if they miss a workout. Some triathletes and marathon runners
suffer heart problems due to years of heavy-duty training.

In conclusion, the benefits of careful, well-regulated exercise seem to outweigh the disadvantages.
I think that providing you follow the maxim of ‘everything in moderation’ you will keep fit and
healthy. [312 words]
