COMPONENT PARTS OF DIFFERENTIAL
SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
A differential is a device capable of
transmitting torque and rotation through
three shafts that almost always used in
one of two ways.
COMPONENT PARTS
OF
DIFFERENTIAL
SYSTEM
1. Pinion drive gear
It transfers the torque speed and
power from driveshaft/propeller shaft
to the differential ring gear.
2. Ring gear
It drives/rotates the differential
case together with the differential
pinion gears.
3. Differential case assembly
It holds the differential ring gear
and housing of differential pinion gears
and side/spider gears.
4. Differential pinion/spider gears
They drive and transfer the torque
speed and power to the side gears.
5. Side gears
It helps both drive wheels to turn
independently when turning through
the use of axle shafts.
6. Axle shaft
It is a steel shaft that driven by the
side/spider gear and transfer the
torque speed and power to the drive
wheels.
7. Axle shaft bearing
It is a ball or roller bearings that fit
between the axle and the inside
portion of the axle housing.
8. Axle housing
It is a metal body that encloses
and supports parts of the rear axle
assembly.
9. Pinion flange
It is equipped with a damper
weight to help dampen driveline
vibration. And also it driven by the
driveshaft/propeller shafts.
10. Axle flange
It is a bracket/holder of disc/drum
brake’s wheel hub.
11. Collapsible spacer
It is used to obtain the specific
amount of pressure or preload. This
spacer is place between the two
bearings. This spacer cannot be over
tightened and then backed off.
12. Side bearings
They are press fit on the
differential case and also they provide
smoothly rotation of the case.
13. Adjuster cap
It adjust the air gap clearance of
the differential ring gear and pinion
drive gear’s meshing gear teeth.
14. Pinion gear thrust washer
It protects the differential pinion
gear’ back from metal to metal contact
friction.
15. Breather tube
It vents the pressure or vacuum in
or out of the rear axle as temperature
changes. If the blocked lubricant
could blow out the axle oil seal or
pinion drive oil seal.
16. Shim washer
It prevents/protects the rear part
of side/spider and differential pinion
gear.
17. Differential carrier
It is the gear box housing of ring gear,
pinion drive gear and differential case
assembly.
TYPES
OF
DIFFERENTIAL
CARRIER
A. Integral or Unitized type
It is formed as a part of axle
housing.
B. Removable type
It can be service at a workbench.
