THE

HISTORY OF
COMPUTERS
THE MOTHER AND FATHER OF COMPUTER

“THE FATHER OF COMPUTER”

Charles Babbage KH FRS was an English polymath, a mathematician, philosopher,

inventor and mechanical engineer, Babbage originated the concept of a digital programmable
computer.
 The father and the founder of the computer is Charles Babbage. He was born in 26th of
December and died 18th of October 1871.

 Charles Babbage was on English polymath, a mathematician, philosopher, inventor and

mechanical engineer.

 Charles Babbage is known as the father of computer because he was the first to invent the
analytical engine. The Analytical engine consisted of an Arithmetic Logic unit of ALU.

“THE MOTHER OF COMPUTER”

Ada Lovelace, a British mathematician, developed the first computer programmer in
1843, making her the world’s first computer programmer

ANALYTICAL ENGINE
The numerical value of Trigonometric Functions of any formula. Babbage used a series of punch
cards for input during the design of analytical engine that are for: Arithmetical operations, numerical,
constants and load and store operations.

The first computer was invented by Charles Babbage, but it was not built

1822
until 1991 Alan Turing invented computer Science The ENIAC (1945) was
the first Electronic general purpose digital computer; it filled a room; it
was designed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert.

Joseph Marie Jacquard a French merchant and inventor invented a

1801 loom that uses punched wooden cards to automatically weave fabric
designs.
Funded by the British government, the project called the
1821 "DIFFERENCE Engine” due to lack of technology at the time,
according to the university of Minnesota.

1848 Ada Lovelace, an English mathematician and the daughter of the poet
lord Byron, writes the world's first computer Program.

Swedish inventor per Georg Scheutz And his son Edvard designed the
1853 world’s First printing calculator. The machine is significant for being
the first to "compute Tabular differences and print the results"

1820 Herman Hollerith designed a punch card system to help calculate the
1840 US census. It save the government years.

ABACUS is the first calculating machine used for counting. It is made

ABACUS of bead rods. It is mainly used for addition, subtraction, multiplication
2500 BC and division,

John Napier’s of Scotland invented a calculating device in the year

NAPIER’S 1617 called “Napier Bones”. Napier’s used the bone rods of the
BONES 1617 counting purpose where some number is printed on these rods. these
rods can do addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

In the year 1642. Blaise Pascal a French Scientist invented an adding

PASCAL’S machine called “Pascal’s Calculator” which means the position of digit
CALCULATOR with the help of gears in it.

In the year 1967. A German mathematician Gottfried Leibniz modified

LEIBNIZ the Pascal Calculator and he developed a machine which could
CALCULATOR perform various calculation bases on multiplication and division as
well.

1940 – 1956. The computers of the first generation used vacuum tubes
as the basic computers for memory and circuitry for CPU (central
FIRST processing unit). These tubes, like electric bulbs, produced a lot of neat
GENERATION and the installations used to fuse frequently. Therefore they were very
expensive and only large organizations were able to afford it.
In the year 1833, a scientist from England known to be Charles
ANALYTICAL
Babbage invented such a machine. It included such features which is
ENGINE used today’s computer language.

THIRD These were the first computer where user interacted with an operating
GENERATION system, a significant leap up, from the punch cards and printouts.

Computer devices with an artificial intelligence and still in

FIFTH development but some of these technologies are beginning to emerge
GENERATION and be used such as voice recognition and understand natural
language.
