CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Study

To improve the quality of education, the role of professional teachers is needed to

educate the life of the nation. Government Regulation Number 17 of 2010 articles 48 and

59 which implies the development of an educational information system based on

technology and information. With a good education system, it will be able to increase

Indonesia's competitiveness through the creation of good human resources. (Sulisworo,

2016)

According to Prosenjit & Anwesan (2021), TikTok is an internet-based social

media-based application that provides features for creating and sharing content in the

form of short videos. The TikTok app is a Chinese social network and music video

platform launched in September 2016. The app allows users to create their own short

music videos. Throughout the first quarter (Q1) of 2018 TikTok established itself as the

most downloaded application, namely 45.8 million times. Menurut kutipan Kartini

Bohang (2018) jumlah ini mengalahkan aplikasi populer lainnya seperti YouTube,

WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, dan Instagram. According to tekno.kompas.com there

are around 10 million active users of the Tik Tok application in Indonesia. The majority

of Tik Tok application users in Indonesia themselves are millennial, school-aged, or

commonly known as generation Z.

According to Fino Yurio K (2018) the Tik Tok application was blocked on July 3

2018, Tik Tok has started to be blocked in Indonesia. The Ministry of Communication
2

and Information has been monitoring this application for a month. As of July 3, the

incoming reports reached 2,853 reports. According to minister Rudiantara in an interview

responding , there is a lot of negative content, especially for children. However, with

various considerations and new regulations, in August 2018 the TikTok application can

be downloaded again. One of the regulations that is suspected is the age limit for users,

which is 11 years old.

Based on Business of Apps data, TikTok has 1.6 billion monthly active users

(MAU) worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2022. This figure is up 4.57% compared to the

previous quarter. In the third quarter of 2022, the number of active monthly users for

TikTok was 1.53 billion users. When compared to the same period last year, the figure

jumped 32.23%. It was noted that the number of active monthly users for TikTok was

1.21 billion users in the fourth quarter of 2021. Likewise, when compared to the fourth

quarter of 2018, the number of monthly active users of this short video sharing

application made in China has jumped to more than 490.4%. The rapid growth in the

number of active monthly users of TikTok shows that this application made by

ByteDance is increasingly popular globally. The popularity of TikTok has especially

skyrocketed since the start of the pandemic, alias in the second quarter of 2020, as shown

in the chart. In total, the TikTok application has been downloaded by 3.3 billion internet

users by the end of 2022, according to Business of Apps data. Given how rapidly the

development of TikTok in Indonesia can be utilized in an interesting and interactive

learning media. As a developing country, it should be if technological advances are put to

good use, especially in terms of education, so that the Indonesian people can catch up

with technology and begin to rise by taking advantage of this very rapid technological

progress (Cindy Mutia Annur : 2023).

3

This the effort to use social media TikTok in delivering speaking material encourages

educators to open new insights by keeping up with the times where everyone uses the

Internet, especially social media TikTok. When students are given lessons using Tiktok

media, it is certain that most students will be more enthusiastic because it has become

their routine every day. Learning speaking will also be fun and not boring because

students will hone their creativity in editing videos using the materials taught, especially

speaking material. Learning speaking which is very closely related to communication also

adds a good correlation bond which is also useful because there are things that are fun

collaborating with English knowledge that will be beneficial for students' lives in the

future.

Efforts to increase speaking learning through TikTok media. This is influenced by the

enthusiasm of students who on average have started to depend on social media. So that

this dependence in the world of education can have a positive impact, one of the efforts is

to provide English learning using the social media Tiktok.

The TikTok phenomenon itself has become daily routine for MA Al Jauhar Semin

students. According to information from teachers at MA Al Jauhar, through a survey they

made the most popular application at the school, the first was a game application and then

the TikTok application. The school is also trying various ways to be sustainable with

existing technological developments, especially in the delivery of the current independent

curriculum learning. Previously, the TikTok application itself had become a creative

method in various learning activities, including learning speaking for class XI MA or

equivalent to high school. Learning speaking has become something that some students

find difficult, this can be seen from interviews conducted by English teachers when

speaking learning begins. Most students experience difficulties for various reasons and

one of the most frequent reasons is because of the nature of learning which tends to be
4

boring. Therefore, the English teacher tried to modify it by using social media TikTok as

an effort to provide fun and educational learning, especially in learning speaking.

Thus it can be concluded that the problem in taking this title is

1. Students who are dependent on internet media or it can be said with advances in

technology that are all digital make them less interested in learning that only lectures,

notes, writes, and listens.

2. An innovation is needed in learning so that learning becomes more fun and not

outdated.

3. The use of TikTok social media, which is the most watched and entertainment in

Indonesia, can be used as a bridge in the delivery of learning, especially learning

English.

Thus the efforts to improve the speaking learning method through social media

TikTok is a holistic learning process aimed at learning for students to understand

teaching materials in a meaningful way that is associated with real-life contexts which in

this case are adapted to the flow of the times, both related to the personal environment.

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that what happens to a person is

a change in the way of learning. The learning method that can be applied in this case is

the use of social media TikTok as a bridge for delivering English speaking materials.

With the explanation of the background above, the researcher is interested in

conducting research on the efforts made by an English teacher in class XI MA Al Jauhar

Semin in delivering speaking material using social media TikTok. And finally given the

title " Analysis of the Use of TikTok Social Media in Lerning Speaking for Class XI MA

Al Jauhar in Academic Year 2023 / 2024 ".

5

B. Identification of Problems

Based on the description the background of the problem above, it can be identified as

follows:

1. Teaching methods that are fun and attract enthusiasm are closely related to the

delivery of material.

2. Most students experience difficulties when pronouncing English words or sentences

because it is not everyday language.

3. The delivery of monotonous material makes students less interested in learning

English speaking.

4. The use of TikTok media is an alternative and a new innovation as a learning

combination for students who still have difficulty learning speaking English.

C. Limitation the Problem

Of the several problems that arise, it is necessary for the writer to limit the

problem so that it is more on target. In this study the limitations of the problem in

question are as follows:

1. This research was conducted at MA Al Jauhar Semin.

2. The research subjects were English teachers and XI A students of MA Al Jauhar in

the 2023/2024 academic year.

3. Analysis of the efforts and stages carried out by English teachers in using social

media TikTok as a means of delivering English learning.

4. The material taken is material in English Chapter 8 XI class MA Al Jauhar Semin

with Conversation material.

6

D. Formulation of the Problem

From the description above and according to the background of the problem,

identification of the problem and limitation of the problem, the problem can be

formulated.

1. How does the teacher in the process of implementing the improvement of

speaking learning for XI A class of MA Al – Jauhar Semin through social

media TikTok?

2. What are the obstacles experienced by the teacher during the speaking

learning process using social media TikTok in XI A class MA Al Jauhar?

E. Research Purposes

The objectives of this study are:

1. To find out the actions were taken by the teacher in the process of implementing

an increase in learning to speaking for XI A class MA Al Jauhar Semin students

through social media TikTok.

2. To know the obstacles experienced by the teacher during the speaking learning

process using social media TikTok for XI A class MA Al Jauhar Semin.

E. Benefits of Research

The research results are expected to bring theoretical, practical, and academic

benefits.

1. Theoretical Benefits
7

Through this study, it is hoped that it can contribute ideas for the development

of science in general and MA Al Jauhar regarding social media TikTok as an

alternative to delivering learning and enriching innovations in the world of education.

CHAPTER II

THEORY STUDY, RELEVANT RESEARCH, FRAMEWORK FOR THINKING,

AND HYPOTHESIS

A. Learning English

Learning is a process that contains a series of teachers and students actions so that

there is a reciprocal relationship in the classroom to achieve certain goals. In learning

there are several objectives to be achieved. According to Duffy and Roehler (1989), as

quoted in (Akhiruddin et al., 2019: 12), learning is an effort that is carried out deliberately

involving and using the professional knowledge possessed by the teacher to achieve

curriculum goals. Therefore, if one of the components cannot interact, then the learning

process will face many obstacles in achieving the learning objectives.

English is one of the important international languages to be mastered or learned.

English is used to develop relations in international forums and strengthen relations

between countries. English is also used to gain knowledge from various branches of

science. People use English to communicate with people different countries. It can

connect you with people around the world. On the other hand, learning English can help

you achieve success. This can increase the chance of getting a job easily. Using English

to communicate can also help people to know, understand and respect each other,

especially those who have different backgrounds such as language, culture, lifestyle, etc.

In Indonesia, English is only learned at school but is not used in everyday life.

English is a tool for communicating orally and in writing. Communicating is

understanding and expressing information, thoughts, feelings, and developing science,

9

technology, and culture. The ability to communicate in its fullest sense is the ability to

discourse, namely the ability to understand and produce utterances and/or written texts

which are embodied in the four language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and

writing. These four skills are used to respond to or create discourse in social life.

Therefore, English subjects are directed at developing these skills so that graduates can

communicate and have discourse in English at a certain level of literacy. English can also

be referred to as a second language because it is a foreign language that enters Indonesia

to be studied in schools and other institutions. To be exact, the new era and current

globalization requires many people to master English as an international language.

Therefore, in Indonesia English is included as a subject in the school curriculum. The

latest curriculum (2013 Curriculum) has provided four hours per week for English from

junior high school to high school level (Poedjiastutie et al., 2018 : 94).

The Indonesian government included English as the first foreign language used in

Indonesia. In Indonesia, English is a foreign language that can be learned at school and

can be used in communication. This is the first foreign language to be studied as a

compulsory subject at school (Panggabean, 2015 : 35 ). Thus, English is the first foreign

language to be officially taught as a compulsory subject for junior high school students in

Indonesia.

Learning English is developing contextual and acceptable English language skills

according to the context and conditions and the daily situations of students. Learning

English is very important for the current generation to adapt to global communication,

literature, media, and work in the present and the future (Marzulina et al., 2021: 417 ).

This is to produce a form of learning English that better addresses students' language

needs.
10

English today is used for many things. Especially in the fields of education,

business, politics, and technology. The importance of learning English is very useful and

should not be ignored, this is because English is widely used by most countries in the

world. English not only acts as a communication tool but also makes it easier to interact

in a new environment. From this we can conclude that learning English is very important

for us in adapting to the development of the existing language, especially in

communicating. English has been playing the main part in several sectors including

medicine, engineering, education, etc. (Nishanthi & Department of Sociology,

Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India, 2018 : 2456 ).

In Indonesia, the use of English is not the national language used, but when

talking about the international field, English is an option that can be used in speaking.

English in Indonesia, has been widely applied in many places, including in schools.

Starting from education, business, politics, technology, public services and others. Which

is often applied to advertisements and on signs in public places. We will find many

curriculums in the science, and engineering education fields written in English (Nishanthi

& Department of Sociology, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu,

India, 2018 ).

This shows the use of English in Indonesia has developed rapidly and has been

used for daily needs, especially in schools. Many schools have required the use of English

in the school environment, this can make it easier for students to use English so that it is

easier to apply it in everyday life. Students have no experience using English in their

daily life and they are not expected to be able to speak in English in the future workplace

(Utami & Nurjati, 2017 : 219).

Currently, English is very necessary because of the importance of understanding

English which is useful in everyday life, especially in the fields of education, business
11

and technology. If learning using effective methods can make students master several

skills ranging from the ability to write, speak, listen, and read. This kind of skill is very

much needed in the world of work. Therefore, this shows how important the use of

English is nowadays.

English as a foreign language has been included in the education curriculum in

Indonesia since Indonesia achieved independence. This government policy is quite

unfounded, namely as an effort to improve the quality of human resources and also

because many books are in English. The hope is that behind the necessity of learning

English, one of them is to be able to carry out oral and written communication. According

to Ratmaningsih (2019 : 230) learning English in Indonesia aims to make language

learners able to communicate with speakers of that language and also learning English is

carried out by non-English speakers and as a second language in certain countries which

are used as a bridge of communication, such as trade and education.

According to Zaim (2016 : 18) in the concept of language learning, there are four

language skills that must be mastered by a language learner, namely speaking skills,

listening skills, reading skills, and writing skills. These four language skills can be

mastered by a language learner supported by the ability to master language components,

namely mastery of grammar and vocabulary.

B. Speaking Skill

Speaking is one of the four deep language skills which plays an important role in

fluent English. Based on Hardiyanto (2018: 106) Speaking is an important part of the

learning process in teaching English as a foreign language. Meanwhile, Kuning (2020:

78) states that speaking is the ability of English-speaking people to convey information

fluently and with good pronunciation. This is supported by Chaney in Tridinanti (2019:

36) who states that speaking is a process of interaction between two or more people
12

which involves producing, receiving and processing information. According to Sartipa

(2019: 161) states that speaking is indeed used to communicate with other people and

with the people of the world.

Speaking is verbal communication, which is a basic skill needed by students.

Therefore, by mastering speaking skills students will gradually build their confidence to

speak and communicate using English as a foreign language with others. According to

Suryani in Sunarya (2018: 281) states that speaking is used to express meaning so that

other people can make sense of them. It's supported by Susanti (2019: 58) states that to be

involved in oral communication, one must be ready to speak without feelings of shame,

fear, lack of confidence, and so on. Based on the explanation of the experts above, it can

be concluded that if students are able to speak English well, then they can use their

communication skills to achieve their goals which convey their messages.

With regard to the ability to speak a good speaker is a speaker who can convey a

message to the listener, so that the speaker can get what he wants according to the

message sent. In addition, speakers can be categorized as able to speak English if they

have good pronunciation, have good fluency, master a lot of vocabulary, have good

grammar mastery, and must be able to arrange words into well-structured sentences

understood by listener. Speaking is useful for measuring students' ability to use English

because this ability is measured in their speaking application. English as a communication

tool, one of which is by speaking. Another benefit of mastering speaking skills is that it

will make it easier for students in their lives and careers to interact and transact later.

C. How to Teach Speaking Skill

The process of teaching English is important in creating the goal of mastering

English. This is mainly done by teachers who teach and also good coordination. Teaching

English speaking is a skill that must be mastered by a teacher because speaking is one of
13

the skills that must be mastered by students. As for some teaching objectives according to

Thomas in Rani (2014 :14) explains that teaching speaking means teaching language

learners to:

a) Generate English sounds and sound patterns;

b) Use word and sentence stress, intonation patterns, and rhythm second language;

c) Choose the right words and sentences according to the right social setting, audience,

situation and subject matter;

d) Arrange their thoughts in a meaningful and logical sequence;

e) Using language as a means to express values and judgments; And

f) Uses language quickly and confidently with some unnatural pauses, which is called

fluency.

Bygate in Rani (2014:12) explains that preparing students to be able to apply

language is one of the problems that occur in teaching foreign languages. Thus, having a

good preparation and plan for the teaching and learning process is important, that includes

teaching methods and materials. Brown in Rani (2014:15) included that how to maintain

students' self-esteem is important in teaching teenagers. He states there are several

principles for designing speech techniques. They are: “(1) use techniques that cover a

spectrum of learner needs, (2) provide intrinsic motivation techniques, (3) encourage the

use of authentic language in meaningful contexts, (4) provide appropriate feedback and

correction, (5) utilize natural relationship between speaking and listening, (6) providing

opportunities for students to initiate oral communication, and (7) encouraging the

development of speaking strategies.“

Teachers must find their own way to help students improve their speaking

competence. Willis as quoted in Wang (2014 : 15) argues that there are "three steps in

teaching speaking: the input stage, the practice stage and the performance stage. At the
14

input stage, students are given a good model to emulate; at the repetition stage, students

carry out tasks in group members; in the performance stage, students carry out

assignments in front of the class. Wang (2014:27) explains that “Some related vocabulary

and background information allows the learner to generate more ideas speak; and certain

speaking strategies help learners to deal with as many distractions as possible in

conversation.

Apart from that, what the teacher needs to pay attention to is the instrument in

delivering English speaking material. According to Dick, Carey, and Carey as quoted in

Budiyanto (2016: 46) "instructional material contains content either written, mediated, or

facilitated by instructors that students as a means to achieve goals also includes

information that students have that will be used to guide progress".

D. Social Media TikTok in Teaching and Learning Process

According to Boyd in Nasrullah (2015: 109) social media is a collection of

software that enables individuals and communities to gather, share, communicate, and in

some cases collaborate or play together. Social media has the power of user-generated

content (UGC) where content is generated by users, not by editors like in mass media

agencies. In essence, with social media you can carry out various two-way activities in

various forms of exchange, collaboration, and getting to know each other both in written,

visual and audiovisual form.

TikTok is one of the social media that is currently being discussed by school-age

children. TikTok social media to express creativity, especially in making videos, TikTok

social media itself is a platform for making videos with special and unique effects easily.

Rahmawati (2018:1-3) Tiktok is a music video application and the official social network

from China which has enlivened the digital industry in Indonesia. Zhang Yiming is one of

the figures behind the launch of the music video platform. He is an alumni of Nankai
15

University, he also founded a technology company called "Byte Dance". From this

process, the social media TikTok was created, which is a medium for making short

videos.

According to Prosenjit & Anwesan (2021), TikTok is an application derived from

internet-based social media that provides features for creating and sharing content in the

form of short videos. TikTok app users can create and share short (15-second) videos

featuring comedy, dancing, singing, or everyday activities, including eating, meeting, and

so on. Then the content can be shared with the general public through the application.

The development of TikTok itself in Indonesia is quite surprising, Indonesia ranks

second as the country with the most TikTok users. TikTok users in Indonesia reach 99.07

million people. Brazil is ranked 4th as the country with the most TIkTok users in the

world with a total of 73.58 million users (Monavia: 2022)

This is quite worrying for the current younger generation because the limitations

of TikTok addiction can affect their teaching and learning activities. What we know is

that the majority of TikTok users are school-age teenagers and some are even underage

but good at using this application.

As teaching staff, seeing this phenomenon, it is only natural for us to create

innovations in the delivery of learning. How is the innovation of the TikTok Social Media

Application a way of delivering learning material. In this case, learning is very

appropriate to coordinate with TikTok Social Media.

E. Relevant Research

Several studies that are relevant to this research are:

1. Research conducted by Anaziyatul Maghfiroh (2021) with the title "Pemanfaatan

Aplikasi Media TikTok sebagai Media Pembelajaran Publik Speaking pada Akun

Wandha Dwiutari ". This study uses descriptive qualitative to analyze several videos.
16

The research results contain the theme of each video, the structure of the text,

introduction, content, and closing, the meaning found in paragraphs, sentences, and

words from the things observed such as semantics, syntax, stylistics and rhetoric.

The similarity in this study with the research that will be conducted is the use of social

media TikTok in learning speaking. While the difference is regarding the object used, in

the research conducted by Anaziyatul using Wandha Dwiutari's account, while this

study used students of class XI A MA Al Jauhar Semin.

2. Research conducted by Riska Marini (2019) with the title "Pengaruh Media Sosial

TikTok terhadap Prestasi Belajar Peserta Didik di SMP N 1 Gunung Sugih Lampung

Tengah ". This study uses a quantitative correlation research with questionnaire data

collection. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant positive influence

between social media TikTok on student achievement. This is in accordance with the

researchers' calculations using the Ms Excel 2010 program, which uses correlation tests.

The similarity of the research carried out is that the theme of social media is TikTok.

The difference is in terms of research methods, the research conducted by Marini uses a

quantitative method, while the research that will be carried out by researchers uses a

qualitative method.

3. Research conducted by Yovita & Ine Rahayu P (2022) with the title “Penggunaan

Aplikasi TikTok sebagai Inovasi Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di Masa Pandemi Covid

19”. This study uses the literature study method by analyzing various studies related to

the use of the TiTok application as a new innovation in English learning media that is

easy to use and has benefits for students and teachers, and videos can be watched

repeatedly with attractive visuals.

17

The similarities with the research above are learning innovations using TikTok, the

difference is that the research conducted by Yovita & Ine has a general theme of

learning if what the researchers are doing specifically discusses English speaking skills.

F. Framework for Thinking

Learning as a process of changing individual behavior through environmental

interaction resulting in changes in knowledge, understanding, skills. In the learning

process there must be a tool used, namely the learning method, where this method must

be adapted to the existing conditions and situations, if the learning process is carried out

with appropriate learning methods, it is hoped that it will increase student motivation in

learning.

If in the learning process students do not feel ready and have no desire to take part

in the learning process because they consider the lesson to be boring and not optimal.

Therefore it is necessary to innovate in delivery methods, one of which is by using social

media TikTok as a new alternative in the world of education, especially English

education, more specifically in learning speaking.

The use of this method can give a new face in learning because it will foster

students' creativity and at the same time make it easier for students to practice English. In

this case the teacher is facilitated in terms of assessment and class conditions become

more conducive in accordance with the established curriculum.

G. Hypothesis

Based on the theoretical basis and framework above, in this research the following

is proposed: there are analysis of the use of TikTok Social Media in lerning speaking for

class XI MA Al Jauhar in academic Year 2023 / 2024.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD

A. Research Method

The form of this research is qualitative research. Moleong (2017: 6) Qualitative

research is research that aims to understand phenomena about what is experienced by

research subjects such as behavior, perceptions, motivations, actions and others

holistically and by means of descriptions in the form of words and language in a

particular context. Naturally by utilizing various natural methods.

According to Sugiyono (2018:15) the qualitative research method is called a new

method, because of its recent popularity, it is called the post positivistic method because it

is based on the philosophy of post positivism. This method is also known as the artistic

method, because the research process is more artistic (less patterned), and is referred to as

an interpretive method because the research results are more concerned with the

interpretation of the data determined in the field.

Qualitative research according to Hendryadi, et. al, (2019: 218) is a process of

naturalistic inquiry that seeks an in-depth understanding of natural social phenomena.

Qualitative research emphasizes quality not quantity and the data collected does not come

from questionnaires but comes from interviews, direct observation and other related

official documents. Qualitative research is also more concerned with the process aspect
19

than the results obtained. This is because the relationship between the parts being studied

will be much clearer if observed in the process.

B. Place and Time of Research

1. Research Place

This research was conducted in class XI A MA Al-Jauhar Semin,

Gunungkidul Regency, which is located in Tlepok, RT 04 / RW 08, Semin, Semin,

Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta Special Region.

2. Research Time

This research was conducted from July to Desember 2023.

C. Research Subjects and Objects

1. Research Subjects

Research subjects according to Suharsimi Arikonto (2016: 26) limit research

subjects as objects, objects or people where the data is for research variables that are

attached, and to problems. In a study, the research subject has a very strategic role

because the research subject is data about the variables observed by the researcher.

The subjects of this study involve 26 students and an English teacher for class XI A

MA Al Jauhar Semin Gunungkidul in the 2023/2024 academic year.

2. Research Object

The object of research is the problem under study. According to Sugiyono

(2017: 88) The object of research is an attribute of people, objects or activities that

have certain variations determined by the researcher to be studied and then drawn
20

conclusions. The object of this research is learning English speaking activities through

social media TikTok for class XI A MA Al - Jauhar Semin Gunungkidul for the

2023/2024 academic year.

D. Data Collection Technique

In this study data collection was carried out by

1. Observation

One technique that can be used to find out or investigate non-verbal behavior

is to use observation techniques. According to Sugiyono (2018:229) observation is a

data collection technique that has certain characteristics when compared with other

techniques. Observations are also not limited to people, but also other natural

objects. Through observation activities, researchers can learn about behavior and the

meaning of that behavior.

The observations in this research were by conducting direct observations in

the field to find out the actual conditions when the process of learning to speak

English using the social media TikTok took place in class XI A MA Al Jauhar

Semin. MA Al Jauhar has currently implemented an Independent Curriculum

starting from the 2023/2024 academic year. This observation will be carried out

before the teaching and learning process takes place or during the preparation of the

ATP (Learning Objective Reference) and the creation of the Teaching Module by the

English teacher for class XI A MA Al Jauhar Semin.

21

Observations will be carried out by directly observing the activities of students

and teachers during the process of learning to speak English in class XI MA Al

Jauhar Semin Gunungkidul.

2. Method of Interview

Interviews are used as a data collection technique if the researcher wants to

conduct a preliminary study to find out things from respondents that are more in-

depth and the number of respondents is small/small. The interview method is a

method of collecting data by using question and answer which is carried out

systematically and is based on research objectives. The author uses this method to

obtain data from respondents, both from teachers regarding the application of the

Tiktok method as an alternative in delivering English speaking lessons and can also

provide information on the progress of learning and students' conditions when this

method is used.

The interview chosen by the researcher was a semi-structured interview.

According to Sugiyono (2018: 467) this type of interview is included in the in-depth

interview category, where semi-structured interviews are conducted by asking

questions freely compared to structured interviews but still in the interview guidelines

that have been made. The purpose of this interview is to find out how the process of

learning speaking using the social media TikTok works. The first respondent to be

interviewed by the researcher was a teacher teaching English class XI A MA Al

Jauhar Semin, then the second respondent was 26 students of class XI A MA Al

Jauhar Semin.

3. Documentation Method

Documents according to Sugiyono (2017: 124) are records of past events.

Documents can be in the form of writing, pictures, or monumental works of a person.

22

Documents are records or work of someone about something that has passed.

Documents about people or groups of people, events, or incidents in social situations

that are appropriate and related to the research focus are very useful sources of

information in qualitative research (Yusuf, 2014: 391).

This study uses school administration documents in the form of ATP, Teaching

Modules, Student Absenteeism (especially when learning is carried out) and Photos

during the implementation of the learning process in class XI A MA Al Jauhar Semin.

F. Research Instrument
Qualitative research instruments according to Sugiyono (2016: 305) are the

researchers themselves. That is, a researcher becomes a tool to record information during

the research. Researchers immediately went into the field to find and collect data needed

in research. If the research focus becomes clear, it is likely that the instrument will be

developed to be used in research, and is expected to complement the data. Instrument

used is a guide in conducting observations and interviews.

The instruments that will be used by researchers in this study are:

1. Observation

Observation as a data collection technique has specific characteristics when

compared to other techniques, namely interviews and documentation. If interviews

always communicate with people, then observations are not limited to people, but

also to other natural objects.

Nasution in Sugiyono (2020:106) stated that observation is the basis of all

science. Scientists can only work based on data, namely facts about the real world

obtained through observations collected with the help of various very sophisticated

tools.
23

Observation data collection techniques are used when the research concerns

human behavior, work processes, natural phenomena and when the respondents

observed are not always correct.

In this case the researcher used participant observation data collection

techniques. In this observation, the researcher is involved with the daily activities of

the person being observed or being used as a source of research data. While making

observations, the researcher participates in what the data source is doing, and feels

the ups and downs. With participant observation, the data obtained will be more

complete, sharper, and will reveal the level of meaning of each visible behavior.

According to Hasanah H. (2016: 16) participant observation is that the person

conducting the observation takes part in the lives of the people being observed.

Generally participant observation is carried out for exploratory research.

Investigating individual behavior in social situations such as way of life, social

relationships in society, etc.

2. Interview

According to Stainback in Sugiyono (2017: 114) states that an interview is a

meeting of two people to exchange information and ideas through questions and

answers, this cannot be found in observation activities which allow researchers to

find out more in-depth things about participants in interpreting situations. and the

phenomena that occur.

Interviews are a very important data collection tool in qualitative research.

Through interviews, researchers will find out more in-depth things about participants

in interpreting situations and phenomena that occur, which cannot be found through

observation. Meanwhile, the purpose of conducting interviews in research is to

24

collect information about human life in a society and the establishment of this

position is a main aide to the observation or observation method.

Interviews are a tool for rechecking or proving information or information

previously obtained. The interview technique used in this research is unstructured

interviews. According to Sugiyono (2017: 320) unstructured interviews are free

interviews where the researcher does not use an interview guide. The interview guide

used is only an outline of the problems to be asked.

3. Documentation

Documents are records of past events. Documents can be in the form of

writing, images, or monumental works by someone. Documents in written form, for

example diaries, life histories, stories, biographies, regulations, policies. Documents

in the form of images, for example photos, live drawings, sketches and others.

Documents in the form of works, for example works of art, which can be in the form

of pictures, sculptures, films, etc. Document study is a complement to the use of

observation and interview methods in qualitative research. In the case of documents,

Bogdan in Sugiyono (2020: 124) states "In most traditions of qualitative research, the

phrase personal document is used broadly to refer to any first person narrative

produced by an individual which describes his or her own actions, experiences and

beliefs".

Researchers will use cellphone cameras to take photos of activities during the

teaching and learning process, then also for administrative documents will use ATP,

Teaching Modules, and Student Absentees for class XI A MA A Al Jauhar Semin.

E. Data Analysis Technique

In qualitative research, data is obtained from various sources, using various data

collection techniques (triangulation), and is carried out continuously until the data is
25

saturated. This continuous observation resulted in very high data variations. The data

obtained is generally qualitative data (although it does not reject quantitative data), so that

the data analysis technique used does not have a clear pattern. Therefore it often

encounters difficulties in analysis. As stated by Miles and Huberman (1984) in Sugiyono

(2017: 132) that the most serious and difficult thing in qualitative data analysis is because

the analytical method has not been well formulated. There is no guide in qualitative

research to determine how much data and analysis is needed to support conclusions or

theories.

Data analysis in qualitative research is carried out when data collection takes

place, and after completing data collection within a certain period. At the time of the

interview, the researcher had conducted an analysis of the answers interviewed. If the

answers interviewed after being analyzed are not satisfactory, the researcher will continue

the

questions again until a certain stage of data is obtained which is considered

credible. Miles and Huberman (1984) in Sugiyono (2017: 133) suggests that activities in

qualitative data analysis are carried out interactively and take place continuously until

complete, so that the data is saturated. Activities in data analysis, namely, data reduction,

data display, and conclusion drawing/verification.

1. Data Reduction

Yusuf (2014: 407) states that data reduction refers to the process of selecting,

focusing, simplifying, separating and transforming "raw" data that is visible in written up

field notes. Therefore data reduction takes place as long as the research activities are

carried out. The data obtained in the field is quite a lot, for this reason it is necessary to

record it carefully and in detail. The longer the researcher is in the field, the more, more

complex and complicated the amount of data will be. For this reason, it is necessary to
26

immediately carry out data analysis through data reduction. Sugiyono (2017: 135) states

that reducing data means summarizing, picking and choosing main things, focusing on

important things, looking for themes and patterns. Thus the reduced data will provide a

clearer picture, and make it easier for researchers to carry out further data collection and

look for it if needed. From the results of the interviews, the researcher will reduce data by

selecting what is important, what is new, what is unique and creating categories and

removing unused data.

2. Data Display

After the data is reduced, the next step is to display the data. In qualitative

research, data presentation can be done in the form of brief descriptions, charts,

relationships between categories, flowcharts and the like. In this case Miles and

Huberman (1984) in Sugiyono (2017: 137) states that what is most often used to present

data in qualitative research is narrative text. By displaying data, it will be easy to

understand what happened, plan further work based on what is understood. In this data

display stage, the categories of data that have been created in the reduction stage are

arranged in order so that the structure can be understood.

3. Conclusion Drawing / Verification

The next step in qualitative data analysis according to Miles and Huberman is

drawing conclusions and verification (Sugiyono, 2017: 141). The initial conclusions put

forward are still temporary, and will change if strong evidence is not found to support the

next data collection stage. But if the conclusions raised at the initial stage are supported

by valid and consistent evidence when the researcher returns to the field to collect data,

then the conclusions put forward are credible conclusions. Thus, the conclusions in

qualitative research may be able to answer the formulation of the problem that was

formulated from the start, but maybe not, because as has been stated that the problem in
27

the formulation of the problem in qualitative research is still temporary and will develop

after the research is in the field.

CHAPTER IV

RESEARCH FINDING

A. Data Description
As stated in the previous discussion, in this study the researcher used a

qualitative research type. Where the researcher directly went into the field to see the

phenomena that occurred in the field. This research was conducted at MA Al Jauhar

Semin Gunungkidul. This is because the researcher is the key to the research so that it

cannot be represented.
28

The data obtained by researchers through 3 methods, namely interview

method, documentation method, and observation method. From several sources

consisting of Mr. M. Ulil Absor, M.Pd as an English subject teacher for class XI A

MA Al Jauhar Semin Gunungkidul totaling 20 people.

The learning method is a creativity in delivering material to students owned by

a teacher in the process of improving the delivery and understanding of material in

class. Therefore, the role of a teacher is very important for the success of learning.

Teachers carry out two main tasks, namely teaching activities and managing the class,

so that the learning process can take place effectively and efficiently.

After the researcher conducted research in class XI A MA Al Jauhar Semin

using in-depth interview methods with informants, participant observation and

documentation related to the English learning method using TikTok social media, the

research results can be described as follows.

1. Preparation and Planning

In delivering a material, a teacher must prepare the instruments that will be

used in the teaching and learning process to support the effectiveness of

learning. This will have an impact on students' understanding of the material

being delivered. In this preparation and planning process, what was done by

Mr. Ulil Absor M.Pd. according to the results of the interview conducted by

the researcher is as follows:

“Before learning, what I have to prepare is to make all the necessary

learning tools and see the material that will be delivered and then
29

adjust it to the method that I will convey in this case, namely the use of

TikTok social media in delivering class XI A speaking material.

Based on the information above, what needs to be prepared before learning is

as follows.

a. Creating a Learning Objective Flow

The Learning Objective Flow is a series of learning objectives that are

arranged systematically and logically in the learning phase. The flow becomes

a guide for teachers and students to achieve Learning Outcomes at the end of a

phase. Learning objectives are arranged chronologically based on the sequence

of learning over time. Teachers can compile their own Learning Objectives

Flow, which consists of a series of learning objectives. The government will

provide several examples of Learning Objectives Flow that can be used

directly or modified, and create a guide for compiling teaching materials.

b. Creating Teaching Modules

The teaching module in the curriculum is a substitute for the RPP

which has a varied format and nature which includes learning

materials/content, interpretation and evaluation techniques which are arranged

systematically and attractively to achieve the expected indicators.

c. Learning Instruments

In this case, the learning instruments prepared are Mobile Phones or

Laptops to upload assignments via TikTok social media.

2. Learning process
30

According to the results of the researcher's observations while

participating in teaching and learning activities in class XI A with Mr. Ulil

Absor, M.Pd. produced several research results as follows.

a. Opening of Learning

1) The teacher opens the lesson with greetings and a joint prayer

followed by all students carefully.

2) The teacher takes out the class attendance sheet and starts

taking attendance of the students.

3) The teacher reviews last week's learning and asks students

several questions.

b. Learning Process

1) The teacher explains the general overview of speaking learning

to students and then explains what will be done today.

Regarding the speaking assignment which is done in groups

and then uploaded on TikTok social media as presentation

material for each group.

2) Because on that day there were no students who were absent

from class, the group was divided into 4 groups with 5

members.

3) Each group is given the task of discussing and then explaining

the material, especially about speaking for class XI .

4) The results of the discussion in each group are then poured into

a short video lasting 3 minutes to 10 minutes which will then be

uploaded to TikTok social media.

31

5) After finishing uploading, each group is given the task of

providing 4 questions that are given to other groups. The

questions are written on paper and then must be answered by

other groups.

6) The results of the questions asked by other groups are then put

together and photocopied to be pasted on each student's

notebook. The results of the notes will be used for homework

and must be completed at the next meeting.

c. Learning Conclusion

1) The teacher ensures that all group assignments have been

completed properly and then re-explains what was discussed in

the teaching and learning process.

2) The teacher ends the lesson by saying hello.

3. After Learning

The post-learning activities carried out by Mr. Ulil Absor, M.Pd. are to

summarize the results of observations during the learning process and also

give special values, especially to students who appear to be the most active

and the most passive, which will later affect the final score in speaking

learning.
32

B. Research Findings
After the research data is presented, the next step is to convey the findings related

to the main discussion, namely the analysis of the use of Tiktok social media in speaking

learning for class XI A MA Al Jauhar Semin. To facilitate the processing of data analysis

of the results of this study, the author will be the basic guideline for this study. Among

others as follows:

1. The Learning Process That Occurs in Class XI A MA Al Jauhar Semin.

The learning process using TikTok social media in class XI A MA Al

Jauhar can be said to be running well because students appear to be obedient

to the teacher's instructions. This can be proven by the final results of the

assignments that are in accordance with what the teacher expected at the

beginning of the learning process.

The preparations made by Mr. Ulil Absor, M.Pd. are entirely in

accordance with what should be prepared when using the independent

curriculum, which the author will describe as follows.

a. The teacher makes learning instruments starting from the Teaching

Module and also the complete Learning Objectives Flow prepared

before teaching in class XI A MA Al Jauhar.

b. In addition, the teacher also makes class attendance which will also be

used in the assessment and recapitulation of the final results in the

report card later.

c. The teacher also provides notes for each student by giving special

marks to students who are considered the most active in class during

learning, this is intended to give appreciation to students.

33

During the learning process, the teacher explained the speaking

material for class XI and the students followed the teacher's instructions in

completing the tasks given at that meeting.

During group discussions, all students appeared to be conditioned with

their respective groups and did group assignments well and also completed

assignments according to the time given by the teacher.

2. Obstacles during the implementation of this method

Obstacles that occurred according to what observers saw during the learning

process were as follows:

a. At the beginning of the lesson, there were several students who fell

asleep in class so the teacher had to wake them up first for a more

effective class condition.

b. During group discussions, there were several students who seemed

indifferent to their group and did not participate in voicing their

opinions.

c. Regarding the technicalities of making TikTok videos, it was

somewhat constrained because students were not allowed to bring

mobile phones, so the teacher had to prepare a Mobile Phone for each

group, one used to make videos.

C. Data analysis
1. Speaking Learning Process

In the process of implementing English Teaching and Learning activities

for speaking material using TikTok social media, the following findings were

obtained.
34

a. Before carrying out teaching and learning activities, teachers have the

task of preparing learning tools in the form of Syllabus and Teaching

Modules.

b. English teachers are able to implement English learning for class XI

speaking material using TikTok social media well and are able to

overcome obstacles well so that all assignments are completed right at

the end of the learning hour.

2. Obstacles Experienced by Teachers During the Learning Process

Some of the obstacles felt by teachers based on the results of the

researcher's interviews with teachers are as follows.

a. At the beginning, there were students who fell asleep in class, making

it difficult and prolonging the process of conditioning the class before

the lesson began.

b. It was observed that there were several students who did not participate

in the discussion.

CHAPTER V

Conclusion and Suggestions

A. Conclusion
Based on the results of the author's research on the use of TikTok social media

as one of the methods of learning English speaking in class XI A and then adjusted to

the formulation of the problem that has been described previously, the author draws

the following conclusions.

35

1. All preparations made by Mr. Ulil Absor, M.Pd. as an English teacher for

class XI A are complete and in accordance with the rules in the provisions of

the independent curriculum.

2. When the teaching and learning process takes place, students follow the

instructions given by the subject teacher properly and complete the uploads on

time.

3. The obstacles that the author sees are more in the inadequate instruments

because each group is only given one Mobile Phone to complete the task.

Meanwhile, the obstacles felt by the teacher are the conditioning of the class

which is considered to take up learning time.

B. Suggestions
Some suggestions that the author gives to several related parties are as

follows.

1. For Schools

In supporting better quality and quality student learning outcomes,

schools should make it easier for students to obtain learning instruments such

as Mobile Phones to support education.

2. For Teachers

The advice the author gives to teachers is to increase creativity in

applying methods to suit the conditions of their students.

3. For Students
36

The author's advice to students is to better follow learning and avoid

detrimental things such as not following learning properly and falling asleep in

class.
