Course description:
Overview on immune system, defense mechanisms by the body, structure and function of
antibodies, the complement system and immunity to infectious diseases. Review of basic
principles of immunologic and serologic reactions; factors affecting antigen antibody reactions,
serial dilution, Collection, preparation, preservation and shipment of serologic specimens; serial
dilution; zonal reaction, principles and practice of specific and non-specific serologic tests for
syphilis; febrile agglutinins (Widal and Weil-Felix tests); auto-immunity (Rheumatoid factor);
streptococcal infections (Anti - streptolysin O titer (ASO) & C-Reactive protein); viral infections
(Tests for HIV & viral hepatitis) and pregnancy test (HCG test in urine); infectious
mononucleosis, toxoplasmosis and acute phase proteins and other miscellaneous tests.
