LIST OF RAMSAR SITES IN INDIA

Team Shashank Sajwan

• The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, also known as the Convention on Wetlands, is an

international treaty focused on the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.
• Signed in Ramsar, Iran, on February 2, 1971, it annually observes World Wetlands Day on
the same date.
• In January 2024, Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender
Yadav, announced five new Ramsar sites, designated as Wetlands of International
Importance.
• These sites include Ankasamudra Bird Conservation Reserve, Aghanashini Estuary, and
Magadi Kere Conservation Reserve in Karnataka, along with Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary and
Longwood Shola Reserve Forest in Tamil Nadu.
• India now boasts a total of 80 Ramsar sites, reaffirming its commitment to wetland
conservation and sustainable management.
