"Balancing Act"
Opening Scene
Setting: The scene opens in a modest living room with minimalistic decor, reflecting a busy
household. The clock on the wall shows 11:30 PM. A sofa with a few scattered toys and a
coffee table with an open laptop and some work papers are visible. The stage is dimly lit,
with a spotlight on the daughter-in-law, Sapna, sitting on the sofa with her phone to her ear.
A soft light is on an older man, Gramps, sitting in a recliner in his living room, holding his
phone.
Narrator: In the quiet of the night, where the weight of the day lingers, we find the delicate
threads of a family stretched thin. Responsibilities, expectations, and the struggle to balance
them all. This is where our story begins.
Sapna (tired, rubbing her temples as she speaks into the phone): I know, Gramps. I just got
home. It's been a crazy day at work. I haven't had a chance to check on Munni yet.
Gramps (voice stern, with underlying concern): Sapna, it's nearly midnight. How can you not
check on her first thing? She's your child, and she's sick. This is not acceptable.
Sapna (frustrated but trying to stay calm): I understand, but I walked through the door five
minutes ago. I'm doing my best here. If you have an issue with how I'm handling things,
maybe you should come over and help out.
Narrator (voice-over, as the light on Gramps intensifies slightly): A clash of generations,
each with their own burdens and perceptions. Gramps, shaped by his time, sees the world
through a lens of duty and care. Sapna, caught in the whirlwind of modern demands,
struggles to meet everyone's expectations, including her own.
Gramps (sighs, softening his tone slightly): Sapna, I know you're working hard. But Lily
needs you. It's not about me having an issue. It's about making sure she's okay.
Sapna (voice trembling slightly): I'm just so tired, Gramps. Every day feels like an endless
race. I barely have time to breathe, let alone be the perfect mother.
Narrator (voice-over, as the light on Emma and Gramps balances): In the silence that
follows, a common ground is sought. The weight of love and responsibility is shared, though
not always equally. Understanding and support must bridge the gap.
Gramps (after a pause, gently): Sapna, I didn't mean to come down hard on you. I'm worried
about Lily, but I'm also worried about you. How about I come over and help out?
Sapna (relieved, tears in her eyes): Thank you, Gramps. That means a lot. I just... I just want
to do right by everyone.
Lights fade.
Scene 2
Setting: The next morning, the living room of Sapna’s house. The scene is more chaotic
now. The sofa is still cluttered with toys, and breakfast dishes are scattered on the coffee
table. The doorbell rings. Gramps enters, carrying a small suitcase.
Narrator: Morning breaks, and with it, the bustle of a new day. Each family member, caught
in their whirlwind, attempts to navigate the chaos. Gramps enters, bringing with him a hope
for connection amidst the disarray
Gramps (entering, looking around, concerned): Good morning, everyone!
Ravi (rushing to grab his briefcase, giving Gramps a quick hug): Hey, Dad. Sorry, can't stay
to chat. Got a big meeting. TTYL!
Ravi(calling over his shoulder to Sapna): Sapna, I'll call you later about dinner plans!
Sapna (following Ravi to the door, talking quickly): Sure, Ravi. Don't forget to pick up the dry
cleaning! And don't worry about Munni, Dad’s here to help.
Ravi(already halfway out the door): Got it! Bye, everyone!
Gramps (setting his suitcase down, looking at Sapna): You weren't kidding about the chaos.
Sapna (sighing, brushing her hair back): I wish I was. Let me quickly run you through
Munni's meds and her schedule and since you like parathas I have made them for you.
Please heat it in the microwave before you eat.
Ajay (Likes to be called AJ)(sitting on the floor, glued to his phone, without looking up): LOL,
Mom, Gramps can figure it out. He's not that old.
Gramps (smiling at Ajay): Aside: What is LOL.
Hey, Ajay. How's school going?
AJ (shrugging, still focused on his phone): Gramps it’s AJ and school is okay, I guess. Got a
big test coming up. It’s NBD
Gramps (chuckling, shaking his head): OK. Is NBD a new subject
AJ: (laughing out): No gramps, it means no big deal. You really need to stay with the latest
lingo. I take back my words. You are old man.
Gramps: What language is this where you are using letters which make no sense. What has
happened to good old simple language?
Munni(weakly smiling, looking up at Gramps): Hi, Gramps. Leave him [Link] you read me a
story later?
Gramps (kneeling beside her, taking her hand): Of course, Munni. Anything for you.
Sapna (standing up, looking at Gramps): I really appreciate this. I'll be back as soon as I
can. Call me if you need anything.
Gramps (nodding): We'll be fine, Sapna. Go take care of what you need to.
Narrator (voice-over, as Sapna grabs her bag and exits, the focus shifting to Gramps and
the children): And so, Gramps steps into the fray, a stabilizing force in the midst of modern
life’s relentless pace. The family, fragmented by their individual pursuits, finds in him a
thread that may yet weave them together.
AJ(finally looking up from his phone, to Gramps): Hey, Gramps, wanna see this funny
video? It's totally epic.
Gramps (sitting down next to AJ): Sure, AJ. Which epic are you watching. The
ramayana/mahabharatha
Munni (from the sofa, softly): Gramps epic means awesome.
Gramps (in a confused voice): Oh. But I thought…never mind (Shaking his head tiredly) Let
me freshen up and come.
Narrator :The journey is far from over, but together, will gramps be able to traverse the
nuances of a modern family.
Lights fade.
