Introduction to air pollution

Air pollution is the contamination of air due to

the presence of substances in the atmosphere
that are harmful to the health of humans and
other living beings, or cause damage to the
climate or to materials. There are many different
types of air pollutants, particulates, and
biological molecules. Air pollution can cause
diseases, allergies, and even death to humans; it
can also cause harm to other living organisms
such as animals and food crops, and may
damage the natural or built environment. Air
pollution can be caused by both human
activities and natural phenomena.

5
Public health measures taken by
states/authorities

The government monitors air quality. If there is

too much air pollution, public authorities at the
national, provincial or municipal level take
action.
• Annual air quality monitoring
• Extra measures to tackle air pollution.
• Low-emission zones for diesel-powered cars
• All new buses zero-emission from 2025
• Air quality around sensitive receivers
• Programs to meet air quality standards

6
Actions taken by international organizations

Following the international community’s increasing

interest in clean air, and emphasizing the need to
make further efforts to improve air quality to protect
human health, the United Nations General
Assembly has designated 7 September as
the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies.
Often, you can’t see air pollution but it is
everywhere. Air pollution causes approximately 7
million premature deaths annually, making it the
single greatest environmental risk to human health
and one of the main avoidable causes of death and
disease globally. Air pollution knows no borders.
Air pollution disproportionately affects women,
children and older persons, and has a negative
impact on ecosystems. Many air pollutants
contribute directly to the climate crisis and
improving air quality can enhance climate change
mitigation. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development, also recognizes that air pollution
abatement is important to the attainment of the
Sustainable Development Goals.

Case study – Delhi

The air quality in Delhi, the capital territory of

India, according to a WHO survey of 1,650
world cities, is the worst of any major city in the
world. It also affects the districts around Delhi.
Air pollution in India is estimated to kill about 2
million people every year; it is the fifth largest
killer in India. India has the world's highest
death rate from chronic respiratory
diseases and asthma, according to the WHO. In
Delhi, poor quality air irreversibly damages the
lungs of 2.2 million or 50 percent of all
children.
On 25 November 2019, the Supreme Court of
India made statements on the pollution in Delhi
saying "Delhi has become worse than
hell". Supreme Court Justice Arun Mishra said
that it is better to get explosives and kill
everyone.

8
During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in
India, The water quality of the
Yamuna and Ganges river basins have improved
as industries are closed due to the lockdown.
The air quality has also significantly improved
during the lockdown.

India's Ministry of Earth Sciences published a

research paper in October 2018 attributing
almost 41% to vehicular emissions, 21.5% to
dust and 18% to industries The director
of Centre for Science and Environment alleged
that the Society of Indian Automobile
Manufacturers is lobbying "against the report"
because it is "inconvenient" to the automobile
industry.

9
Conclusion

We all should make the following changes:

When you can, walk, ride a bike, or take

public transportation. For driving, choose a
car that gets better miles per gallon of gas, or
choose an electric car.” You can also
investigate your power provider options—you
may be able to request that your electricity be
supplied by wind or solar. Buying your food
locally cuts down on the fossil fuels burned in
trucking or flying food in from across the
country. Support leaders who push for clean
air and water and responsible steps on climate
change. When you see in the news or hear on
the weather report that pollution levels are
high, it may be useful to limit the time when
children go outside or you go for a jog.
Generally, ozone levels tend to be lower in the
morning. If you exercise outside, stay as far as
you can from heavily trafficked roads. Then

10
shower and wash your clothes to remove fine
particles.

The air may look clear, but that doesn’t mean

it’s pollution free. If the air quality is bad, stay
inside with windows closed.
If you live or work in an area prone to
wildfires, stay away from the harmful
smoke as much as you’re able. Consider
keeping a small stock of masks to wear when
conditions are poor.
Wear sunscreen. When ultraviolet radiation
comes through the weakened ozone layer, it
can cause skin damage and skin cancer.
