Tutorial 2 – Soil parameters and phase relationships

(* questions are harder than the others)

For a soil with the following parameters, determine:

Q1 Dry bulk density, 𝜌𝑑 in terms of bulk density, 𝜌 and moisture content 𝑤

Q2 Volume of soils, 𝑉𝑠 in terms of specific gravity, 𝐺𝑠 total soil volume, 𝑉 and dry density, 𝜌𝑑

Q3 Void ratio, 𝑒 in terms of specific gravity, 𝐺𝑠 and dry density, 𝜌𝑑

Q4 Volume of voids, 𝑉𝑣 in terms of total soil volume, 𝑉 specific gravity, 𝐺𝑠 and dry density, 𝜌𝑑

Q5 An oven tin containing a sample of moist soil was weighed and had a mass of 37.82 g; the
empty tin had a mass of 16.15 g. After drying the tin and soil were weighed again and had a mass of
34.68 g. Determine the void ratio of the soil if the air-void content is:

a. Zero
b. 5% (assume a specific gravity of 2.70)

Q6 A sample of silty clay was found to have a volume of 42.0 cm3. Its mass at natural water
content was 61.1 g and after oven drying it weighed 49.2 g. The specific gravity of the solids was
2.65.

Calculate the void ratio, water content and degree of saturation.

Calculate also the dry and saturated bulk densities.

Q7* A fully saturated clay sample has a volume of 162 cm3 and mass 290 g. The specific gravity
of the solids is 2.79.

Determine the void ratio, porosity, water content, dry and saturated bulk densities.
