ADJECTIVES

Words that describe a noun or a pronoun are called


adjectives.

ADJECTIVES OF QUALITY

These adjectives tell the quality of a noun or a pronoun.

Ex. thick, good, white, happy, hungry, weak, excellent etc.

1. Ajay is a good boy.

2. The dog was hungry.

3. He is an excellent cook.

4. Her skin is red.

ADJECTIVES OF QUANTITY

These adjectives tell the quantity of a noun or pronoun.

Ex - much, a little, some, a lot of etc.

1. She has a lot of money.

2. There was much milk left in the bottle.

3. Would you like to have some coffee ?

4. He has bought a little butter.


ADJECTIVES OF NUMBER
These adjectives tell the number of a noun or pronoun.
Ex - one, two, many, third, dozen, last etc.

1. Mohan stood second in the class.


2. We have three toffees with us.
3. Asha stood last in the race.
4. We were the first to reach the party.

DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES
These adjectives are used to point out some particular nouns or pronouns.
Ex - this, that, these & those.
1. This pen was broken.
2. These books are yours.
3. That man is lame.
4. Those boards are hard.

We use degrees of comparisons to compare the nouns.


Adjectives that tell us about the quality of a nouns are said to be in the positive degree.

Adjectives that compare two people or things are said to be in the comparative degree.

Adjectives that compare three or more things or persons are said to be superlative
degree.

Formation of degrees of comparison

A). An adjective can be changed from the positive degree into its comparative and
superlative degree in two ways.
1. Positive degree + er = comparative degree
2. Positive degree + est = superlative degree

B). An adjective that has two or more syllabus, forms the comparative degree by adding
more, and the superlative degree by adding most, before the words.
