Types of Slabs
Two way slabs
Basic Concepts
• The slabs having ratio of longer to shorter side < 2.00
• Are required since always, rectangular with narrow width configuration is
not desirable
• Halls
• Rooms
• Lecture Theatres
• Behavior is two way and Bend like a dish
• Always carry bending in both directions
• Need to be designed for active bending moments

Two way slabs
Design Concept
• Two sets of parallel strips, in two directions, intersecting each other, part of the
load carried by one set and transmitted to one pair of edge supports, and the
remainder by the other
• Notice that the outer strips in (b) are not only bent but also twisted.
• Load carried not only by bending in two direction but also by twisting
Two way slabs
Analysis by coefficient Method
• ACI coefficient Process
• It’s the oldest since 1963
• Not repeated after 1977 but permissible under ACI 318-08
• Uses coefficients for negative and positive moments
• Slabs are designed for both direction separately
• Effect of Transverse Beams is least hence may overestimate
• Used for slabs supported at the edges by walls, steel beams, or
monolithic concrete beams having a total depth not less than about 3
times the slab thickness.

Analysis by coefficient Method
• This method makes use of tables of moment coefficients for a variety of
conditions.

Two way slabs
Analysis by coefficient Method
• Uses
Large halls and assembly areas
Lecture rooms
Flexible rooms sizes in residential and commercial sector

Two way slabs
Coefficient Method
• The solution procedure is as follows:
• Calculate Slab Thickness
• Determine Factored Loads
• Estimate span ratio “m” m=la/lb (shorter to longer span ratio)
• Sort out the end conditions and pickup coefficients
• Calculate Moments for negative and positive section
• Determine Ast
