1. Removal/installation
A. Removal of the Pitot-Static Probe (856NA1 and 856NA2) (See Figure 201.)
CAUTION: THE PROCEDURES THAT FOLLOW ARE ONLY APPLICABLE TO REPLACING A
PITOT-STATIC PROBE DUE TO HEATER ELEMENT FAILURE.

C. Pitot Probe Drain Hole Check
NOTE: Do the Pitot-Static Drain Hole Check in accordance with current inspection intervals
specified in Chapter 5.
The drain hole is located approximately 1.5 inches [3.8 cm] aft from the front of the probe
on the lower surface.
(1) Find the pitot drain hole on the pilot's pitot-static probe.
(2) Make sure that the drain hole is clear by use of a high intensity light shown through the hole while
you look through the pitot probe.
NOTE: A 0.029 to 0.032 inch [0.74 to 0.81 mm] diameter wire (brass or copper) can be put
into the drain hole to check for and/or remove any contamination. If contamination
exists, disconnect the pitot pressure line from the probe and back-flush the
contaminate out the probe's pitot opening with dry nitrogen.
(3) Find the pitot drain hole on the copilot's pitot-static probe.
NOTE: The drain hole is located approximately 1.5 inches [3.8 cm] aft from the front of the
probe on the lower surface.
(4) Make sure that the drain hole is clear by use of a high intensity light shown through the hole while
you look through the pitot probe.
(5) Find the pitot drain hole on the stand-by pitot-static probe.
NOTE: The drain hole is located approximately 1.5 inches [3.8 cm] aft from the front of the
probe on the lower surface.
(6) Make sure that the drain hole is clear by use of a high intensity light shown through the hole while
you look through the pitot probe.
D. Static Port and Pitot-Static Distortion Check (See Figure 203, Figure 204, Figure 205, Figure 206 and
Figure 207.)
NOTE: Do the static port and pitot-static distortion check in accordance with current inspection
intervals specified in Chapter 5.
The pitot-static probe must be replaced if the probe does not meet all the visual inspection
check limits.
(1) Do a visual inspection of the general probe condition:
(a) Visually inspect the unit for physical damage to its precision contoured surfaces.
(b) Inspect for unwanted material in the static ports, drain hole, and pitot opening.
(c) Check the head and strut sections of the unit for any bending or twisting that you can see.
EFFECTIVITY: ALL

(2) Do the static port check as follows:
(a) Examine the static pressure ports to make sure that the edges are perpendicular to the
machined contour surface. Rounded or high static port edges must not be more than 0.003
inch [0.076 mm]. (See Figure 203.)
(b) Examine for scratches, nicks, or surface irregularities to a depth of more than 0.015 inch
[0.381 mm] which are less than 0.5 inch [12.7 mm] from the static port.
(c) Examine for defects that are more than 0.025 inch [0.635 mm] along the rest of the head, and
more than 0.125 inch [3.175 mm] on the pitot-static probe strut.
(3) Do the pitot-static probe tip check as follows:
(a) The leading edge lip of pitot opening must be sharp. The flatness of the lip must be between
0.015 and 0.025 in [0.381 and 0.635 mm]. (See Figure 204.)
1) With a 0.025 inch [0.635 mm] wire type feeler gage and 10X magnification, hold the feeler
gage next to the lip of the probe and make sure that the lip does not extend above the
edge of the gage.
(b) The lip edge must not be curled or flared out. (See Figure 205.)
NOTE: Slide a fingernail along the outer surface at the end of pitot-static barrel to find this
condition.
(c) Indentations on the lip must not be more than 0.030 inch [0.762 mm] from the usual tip
diameter. A dent at anywhere around the opening must not affect more than 20% of
circumference. (See Figure 206.)
NOTE: Small inward dents on the lip which do not change the roundness of the pitot
opening are permitted.
It is possible that lip indentations that are more than these tolerances can be
repaired. Send the units to Rosemount, Inc. for possible repair.
(d) The leading edge can have small nicks or chips. (See Figure 207.) There must not be more
than one nick with a depth of between 0.025 and 0.035 inch [0.635 and 0.889 mm] or a nick
with a depth of more than 0.035 inch [0.889 mm].

(4) Attach the left inclinometer plate attachment to the probe barrel tool using a 3/16-inch allen
wrench.
NOTE: Reference the text alignment information on the templates to make sure of proper
placement on the probe barrel tool.
(5) Make sure that the upper, middle and lower contour templates are attached properly to the body of
the probe barrel tool.
NOTE: Once the guide on the aft side of the probe bumps against the vane of the probe,
finger tighten the clamps using the four knobs.
(6) Carefully slide the probe barrel tool forward to aft onto the pilot’s pitot-static probe. Make sure that
the guide is flush against the vane of the pitot-static probe.
(7) Set the inclinometer on the left inclinometer plate attachment along the scribe line that runs fore
