Lesson topic
This class aims to improve reading skills in Japanese for advanced level students.

Lesson target
1. To be able to understand the essential sentence structure, expression, vocabulary, etc, needed to read at an
advanced level.
2. To not only be able to understand advanced text and its main ideas, but to also be able comprehend the
background implication of the text.
3. To be able to read text using reading strategies that allow for a more proper understanding.

Syllabus and plan


Adding to the first quarter, lecture time will be used to nurture advanced reading skills. The second quarter will
include reading content specific editorials and essays to further establish an advanced reading ability. The course
shedule is as below.

Lesson target
To be able to critically analyze and argue about different views of Japanese Culture and Society.

Syllabus and plan


Students are to carry out an inquiry into modern social structures of Japan and their origins, via the use of
fundamental knowledge gained from ‘Japanese Studies I’, and to enhance the knowledge needed for success in
specialized fields of study or research.
In this class students will aim to recognize, observe and comprehend the various problems that lie latent in
Japanese society that has experienced tremendous changes in a very short time since WWII; and at the same time
study the future role or images that Japan should take or project in the international community.

The course schedule is as follows:


Class 1: Topic/Investigation method
Class 2: Questionnaire/Presentation creation
Class 3: Rehearsal and feedback
Class 4: Presentation
Class 5: Presentation
Class 6: Presentation
Class 7: Final exam and feedback
Class 8: Task-based assignment

1 class per week for 8 weeks


1 class = 15 hours per quarter
