English Literature Graduates’ Careers besides of Teaching

In this modernization era which full of technology, English is one of the

aspects that very important in our lives. There are many things that use English in

this era, such as social media, some information in any media, including learning

material. English is important because we can get connection, easy to learn

something new, become an insightful person, and boost your career. With all

those things, we need to understand English to increase our own value, so we can

get some information from around the world. Those things create opportunities in

the world of education to learn English in depth. English literature is one of the

college departments that studies English more deeply. In this major, we will learn

about basic English such as speaking, listening, and writing. Then, we also learn

about English culture, phonetics and phonology of English, syntax, morphology,

poetry, and prose in English era. English literature graduates have skill that will

provide their career in industrial world. With that skill they will get greater job

opportunities, can improve their careers, can be promoted, and easy to do business

trip. Normally, people will think about English literature graduates that going to

be a teacher or a lecturer. There are more career prospects of English literature

graduates, such as translator, interpreter, and writer.

Translator is one of the jobs that English literature graduates can do. This

is a job that someone translates some texts from the source language to the target

language. According to Indeed Editorial Team (2023), A translator is a person

who interprets one language and converts it into another. Translators can interact
with persons who speak various languages since they are fluent in at least two

languages. Because lots of the information that use English in media texts, this job

is needed to translate the text which has information for people who do not

understand English. Translator will make it easier for people to get information

from English texts. Some of skills which you must master are writing, language

knowledge (vocabulary), reading comprehension, cultural knowledge, and

computer skill. Those skill you can learn and improve during college. There are

several things to do before being a translator. You must finish your master’s

degree or bachelor’s degree. Then, you can join the Translation Professional

Certification Program.

Unlike the translator, interpreter is someone who interpret a language from

source language to target language orally (spoken language) and happens on the

spot. According to Centre for Culture, Ethnicity, and Health (2014), An

interpreter is a specialist who has the qualifications to interpret speech objectively

and accurately into another language. They are also expected to uphold a code of

ethics. The interpreter must be objective, express no opinion and not represent the

client's interests. Being an interpreter is more difficult than being a translator. This

job requires you to have cultural knowledge, language knowledge, speaking, and

listening comprehension. There are more skills that you must master, but those

skills that have been mentioned are the very important skills. If you want to be a

professional interpreter, you must have language certificate after you finish your

college. Hone your skills with often listen to English through music or film. You
can also join the foreign language community to practice your tongue and

memory.

A job which mostly English literature graduates do is being a writer.

According to MasterClass (2021), A writer is a person involved in the writing

process. Anyone who participates in the writing process, regardless of whether

their work is published or not, is qualifies as a writer. A writer doesn't even have

to compose their own original ideas. There are several kinds of writers, such as

content writer, copywriter, scriptwriter, etc. The skills that you must develop are

writing skill, reading comprehension, creativity, and research skill. Those skills

are the key for you to be a good writer. You must not have a certificate if you

want to be a writer. You can take writing classes or join a writing community to

improve your writing skills. You must keep learning and hone your skills.

With so many things that use English, causing English to become one of

the important aspects of life today. By understanding English can increase careers

opportunities. We cannot rule out the possibility that graduates of English

literature have a lot of opportunities to pursue rewarding careers outside of

teaching. Those careers are translator, interpreter, and writer. If you have good

writing, reading, and knowledge of vocabulary skills, you can be a good

translator. Whenever you feel confident with your understanding of vocabulary,

listening, and speaking skills, you can try to be an interpreter. Besides that, a

writer will always be needed at any time. To become a writer, you must be

creative and have writing also reading skills. English literature graduates do not
always have to teach. They can do more than that according to their wishes and

abilities.
