Change Story: 1

Vocational training increases in income

Mr. Aakash Khuna is a 23-year-old

young who belongs to janjati
community. He lives in a joint family of
8 members in Bheemdatta-18,
Kanchnapur. He used to work in
Kathmandu as a daily wage worker.
Due to the Covid pandemic, he had to
return home. He lost his sources of
income and was unemployed in his
home and during the same period, his
father who was an assistant mason in
the place was also unemployed due to
the pandemic situation. It created
difficulties in running the family smoothly. Similarly, unemployment created an economic crisis in
the family so his two brothers and sister were compelled to left school because they were
unable to pay fees as their sources of income were lost.
During that period, he had come across the advertisement for bricklayer mason training
organized by NEEDS Nepal in his place. He got selected for the training and accomplished the
training courses. He," The training was very fruitful. It provided employment opportunities.
During the training courses, we were paid by the contractors which assisted them in running the
family". He further illuminated the importance of such training which made him a skilled mason
of the place. He," The training provided them opportunities to know the contractors of the place
which is very important in this sector for getting various employment opportunities. From that
period, I got work around 25 days a month and earned around 20k to 25k per month. After
training, I started working as a mason despite daily wage workers. The president of the mason
association has helped me a lot by providing various employment opportunities and I regularly
get work”. The model used in the training supported them a lot. He told that he found the
training was different than other training programs. We worked in actual working conditions from
the day first to the completion of the training. Both supervisors and instructors taught them
various skills which made them capable of working as a mason in the places. During the training
period, we got opportunities to interact with local contractors of the places. He told that the
certificate that they got from the training had also aided them in easily getting employment.
The training supported him in getting various employment opportunities which increases the
sources of income in the family. The family is running smoothly. He and his father are getting
work regularly. He, "My both brothers and sister are going to school regularly. I did not get such
opportunities for study but I will work harder for creating opportunities to study for my brothers
and sister. He further told that he has opened a grocery shop for his wife which also increased
the family income which also aided in running the family smoothly. He was very grateful for this
wonderful training opportunity.

The aspired trainee got training opportunities and the skills supported him in smoothly running
the family. The training has uplifted the position of the trained graduate in the working conditions
as he started working as a mason from daily wage worker. Employment increased income
sources in the family which aided in education opportunities for school left children and also
aided in creating employment opportunities for remaining family members.

Change Story: 2

Mrs.Basanti Chaudhary is a 33-year-old woman

who belongs to the janjati community. She lives
in a joint family of 16 members in Dhagadhi-16,
Bhada of Kailali district. She and her husband
had run a grocery shop in the area for running
the family. She wanted to explore her business
for gratifying the needs of the family but due to
a lack of skills, she could not invest. She
realized that she could have technical skills for
running the business in the place. Living in a
joint family and fulfilling each family member's
needs is very difficult with a small income. So, family members need to work as daily wage
workers to fulfilling family needs as well as smoothly run the family.
Meanwhile, she had come across the advertisement for general cook training organized by
NEEDS Nepal in her place. She was scrutinized for the training program and was successfully
trained. After completion of her training, she established her own business of small hotel (Khaja
Pasal) and did great in her place. She" I had a grocery shop in the place which support me to
fulfill only basic needs of my family but the training provided me skills which motivated me for
establishing Khaja pasal which improves my income." The main source of her family was that
shop and both husband and wife worked on it. After participation in the training, she got skills
and taught her husband who aided her in running khaja pasal in that place. She ran both a
grocery shop and a small hotel which not only increase their income but also gained respect in
society. She became an example in the place that if one is willing to do, nothing is impossible.
She told "When we had only shop, only basic needs of our family were met. There was no
saving but after exploring the business that is establishing shop supports for saving. We have
daily about 2000-3000 profit in seasons and this has aided them for further expansion of the
business as well as saving for coming future." She further added that most of the youths of her
place went to India for employment opportunities. Most of the men of that area have the
perception that money can only be made by employment in India. There is no scope in our
place. No one utilizes the available resources. She added her husband also wanted to go to
India with his fellows for employment purposes but due to this training, she motivated him to
support her and expand their business, and finally successes in making it true. This was the
turning point of their life and wants to engage in it in the coming future also. She said," the skills
that I have gained in the training helped me a lot and I will maximize its utilization in the coming
days also for more expansion of my hotel in the place"
She told that the training was very effective. It created an opportunity to learn about various food
items and also helped me identify their needs in the area and further motivated me for its
establishment.
The aspired trainee got training opportunities and the skills supported for self-employment which
is the major objective of this project. The story also reflected the changes in the lifestyles of the
trainees after acquiring the skills needed and also provided ideas that if the needed trainee got
the opportunity for training; the best results can be easily obtained.

Public Relation & Networking:

 Established Employment Spot in Bheemdatta with coordination with Bheemdatta municipality for
collecting the data of skilled manpower in the place
 Collected data of employment providing services, skilled workers, employment seeking
organizations of 10 municipalities of project districts
 One of our trainees got honored as progressive farmers in farmers fare conducted by
Bheemdatta municipality
 Success story and features news covered by print media and national TV

Lesson Learning:

 It has learnt a lesson that distance monitoring using virtual technology would be also contributed to
track/follow up of implemented activities: photo collection, virtual meeting, cross-phone contact, messenger
group, etc.
 It would be better to support entrepreneurship/livelihood collectively with geographical cluster approach (like
through group in a community).

Challenges and Way Forwards:

 Coordination and collaboration should be done with the local governments before implementation
of activities in the places. Collaboration with stakeholders (local governments) developed
ownership to program
 Safety measures should be strictly monitored in all training conducted places otherwise it may
create problems if any of them suffered from COVID
 Subsidy should be provided to trainees and link them with local level after training completed for
sustainability of the programs
 Progressive, Innovative farmers should be encouraged and support them as possible.
 Local trainers should be selected as possible as they may help to reduce the conflicts, confusions
that may be created in training programs by difference in languages.
 Good coordination and coordination should be done with training provided organizations, local
governments which reduces duplication of program in the places and helps the needy and
progressive people who wants to become independent by using skills of training
 The voices of the EDF Committee members should be listened for knowing the opportunity of
required training programs in the place as committee consist of different members of all sectors
which will support us for knowing the actual situation and assist us for planning upcoming
activities
 Engaging local governments in the project rigorously which enable to allocate required budgets
from them for post-training support
