gdb Hunting and


Exclusion Zone Maps on compatible GPS Units using Mapsource.

Version 3 (Updated 7/1/14)


Follow these instructions to download Hunting and Exclusion Zone GPS Maps from the DPI
Game Licensing webpage and upload them to your compatible GPS unit. The instructions
are designed for any GPS unit compatible with .gdb files and that interfaces with MapSource
software. You will need an SD memory card in your GPS unit with at least 1Gb of free space
to upload these files.

Warning: These instructions will assist you to upload files onto your GPS unit’s SD memory
card. SD cards with pre-loaded maps will be re-formatted during this process and existing
map files lost.

There are two ways the maps can be downloaded:


1. During the process of booking your Written Permission, OR
2. Downloading them directly from the DPI Game Licensing Booking System home page
(go to www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/hunting).

Once downloaded the process for installing the file into MapSource and transferring into
your GPS is the same. See detailed instructions below.

Download Method 1 – Access the GPS .gbd files during the process of booking your written permission

Book your hunt as per normal via the online Game Licensing Booking
System.

After selecting your hunting area and entering your details you will
be taken to the GPS download screen.

Click ‘Download’ next to the Hunting Exclusions Map .gbs file.

Save the file to a known location on your computer.

Download Method 2 – Downloading directly from the DPI website

Navigate your web browser to the online Game Licensing Booking


System main page via the DPI website
(www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/hunting).

Enter your licence number and Security Code then click on the
‘View GPS Mapping Data’ hyperlink.

You will then be taken to the GPS Data page. This page lists all the
GPS Data that may be downloaded in all the different file types.

Scroll down until you find the .gdb Garmin MapSource file. Click on
the ‘Download’ hyperlink.

Save the file to a known location on your computer.

Installing the .gdb file onto your computer and into MapSource:

Navigate to the location where the file was saved and double
click on the file to unzip it.

Depending upon your computers operating system the file may


automatically unzip and open or ask you to save the zipped file to
another location. In that case go to that location and open the
unzipped file.

Double click on the HuntingExclusions.exe file.

Click ‘Next’ to begin installing the maps into MapSource.

Select the location where you want to map file saved (or use the
default location) and click ‘Install’. The Wizard will then install
the map data into MapSource.

Click ‘Finish’ to close the wizard.

Open MapSource and the file will appear in the drop down box
on the top left hand side of the screen. Click on the file to display
the maps. All your installed maps will appear in this drop down
menu.

Transferring Maps from Mapsource into your compatible GPS unit:

Open MapSource on your computer.

Click the drop down menu on the top left hand side of the screen.
The drop down box will show all compatible map sets installed in
your MapSource. Hunting and Exclusion files are named depending
upon the quarter (i.e 1Q = 1st January to 31st March) and the year
for which they are relevant.

Click on the Hunting and Exclusion map you wish to install onto
your GPS and that map will appear in the main window.

Click on the ‘Map Tool’ on the toolbar on the top of your screen.

Click on the main map window to select the hunting area map, it
will turn from a white background to pink. This selects that you
wish to upload this map to your GPS.

Return to the drop down menu on the left hand side of the screen
to select other maps that you want to upload to your GPS (e.g road
maps, marine maps, contour lines, etc). You must select all the
maps you wish to appear on your GPS at this point. When you
upload the new maps any current maps on your GPS will be
removed.

*Any maps stored on your GPS’s micro SD card will be wiped


during this process. If you have purchased a micro SD card with
pre-loaded maps it will be wiped during this process.

Once you have selected all the map sets and tiles you want to
upload to your GPS go to the “Transfer” menu and select “Send to
Device”.

Ensure that your GPS device is selected (In this example we are
using a Garmin 60CSx). Then click ‘send’. The map files will then
upload to your GPS.

Once the map data is finished transferring you can unplug your
GPS. It is ready for use with the new maps installed.

Hunting areas will appear green on your screen. Exclusion zones


will appear blue. Other colours will appear for bow hunting only
zones and weekend exclusion zones.

Caution: Background base mapping on your GPS unit may also


show National Parks and Crown Lands in green. Be careful when
hunting near boundaries and ensure you know where you are at all
times. as they may not be clearly defined on your GPS unit.
