Cylinder Liner Lifting Modification Guide

This service letter from MAN B&W Diesel A/S addresses an issue with the lifting and tilting screw on 35-98MC engines, where the diameter of the screw shoulder may obstruct contact with the cylinder liner. Updated designs have been implemented, and it is recommended to check for full contact before lifting the cylinder liner, with guidance on modifying the screw if necessary. The letter emphasizes the importance of ensuring proper contact to avoid operational issues.

Service Letter SL00-376/DHA

March 2000

35-98MC Engines
Lifting of Cylinder Liner
Action Code: MODIFICATION

Dear Sirs

It has recently been discovered that in some cases the diameter of the shoulder on
the lifting and tilting screw is the same as the diameter of the spot-face made on the
cylinder liner, thus obstructing the required contact between the liner and the
shoulder of the screw (see Fig. 1). The designs of both the lifting and tilting screw
and the cylinder liner have now been updated to ensure full contact, and this update
has been implemented on new cylinder liners.

To facilitate reliable feeler gauge checking, a groove should be ground or filed on the
liners of all engines in service (see Fig. 2).

We recommend that a check be made, either visually or by using a feeler gauge,

prior to lifting the cylinder liner, to ensure that the lifting and tilting screw is in full
contact with the spot-face on the liner (see Fig. 3). If it is not, then the diameter of the
shoulder on the lifting and tilting screw should be reduced by max. 3 mm.

We further remind you to always check, before lifting the cylinder liner, that there is
full contact between the liner and the screw.

Yours faithfully,
MAN B&W Diesel A/S

Carl-Erik Egeberg Erik Ohlsen
