Introducon to Art Design

RO J EC T O U T L I N E 2 02 4: Instructor: Cherie Bowker

Pattern, Colour, Value, Repetition and Rhythm
Your task is to Design, Create and Build a Pattern

Project Description

Visual Assignment 1: Creating a Pattern DUE DATE: June 7

Course: Arts and Design Fundamentals

Objective: The goal of this assignment is to develop an understanding of different types

of patterns and their applications in art and design. You will start with an inspiration
pattern and create an original design that demonstrates your knowledge and creativity,
incorporating various types of patterns discussed in class.

Assignment Overview:

1. Research and Analysis:

• Study the different types of patterns: regular, irregular, geometric, organic,

and abstract patterns.
• Analyze examples of each pattern type in various contexts (e.g., nature,
architecture, textiles, graphic design).

2. Inspiration Pattern Selection:

• Choose an existing pattern that inspires you. This could be from any
source such as nature, textiles, architecture, or art.
• Analyze the selected pattern, identifying its type and unique
characteristics.

3. Concept Development:

• Using your inspiration pattern, develop a concept for your own pattern.
Introducon to Art Design
• Integrate at least two other pattern types into your design, ensuring they
complement the inspiration pattern.

4. Pattern Creation:

• Create an original pattern based on your concept.

• Ensure the pattern is visually cohesive and demonstrates an understanding
of the different types of patterns.

5. Presentation:

• Prepare a visual presentation of your pattern.

• Include a written explanation (300-500 words) describing your design
process, the types of patterns used, and the rationale behind your choices.

Detailed Steps:

1. Research and Analysis:

• Regular Patterns: These patterns repeat in a predictable, grid-like fashion.

Examples include checkerboards, polka dots, and honeycombs.
• Irregular Patterns: These patterns lack a predictable structure and may
appear random. Examples include clouds, tree bark, and abstract art.
• Geometric Patterns: These patterns are based on geometric shapes such
as circles, squares, and triangles. They can be regular or irregular.
• Organic Patterns: These patterns mimic forms found in nature, often fluid
and freeform, like leaves, flowers, and animal skins.
• Abstract Patterns: These patterns do not represent anything specific and
often rely on color, shape, and line to create visual interest.

2. Inspiration Pattern Selection:

• Choose an existing pattern that inspires you.

• Analyze the inspiration pattern, noting its type and distinctive elements.
• Consider how you can build upon this pattern in your own design.

3. Concept Development:
Introducon to Art Design
• Using your inspiration pattern as a foundation, sketch initial ideas for your
pattern.
• Experiment with integrating at least two other pattern types into your
design.
• Ensure your design maintains a cohesive look while incorporating diverse
pattern elements.

4. Pattern Creation:

• Use any medium you are comfortable with (coloured, hand-drawn,

painted, etc.).
• Focus on creating a pattern that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also
demonstrates a clear understanding of the different types of patterns.
• Pay attention to elements such as color, line, shape, and repetition.
• Give a creative name to your pattern.

5. Presentation:

• Create a visual representation of your pattern. Create your pattern on art

paper and mount your pattern to a black card stock.
• 11x17 SIZE BOARD
• LANDSCAPE
• Place your inspiration pattern on the back of the board.
• Example provided in class. Take notes.

Submission Requirements:

• One 11x17 board with 1” border on all sides and 3-4” border at the bottom.

Evaluation Criteria:

• Creativity and Originality: How unique and innovative is the pattern?

• Understanding of Pattern Types: How well do you demonstrate an
understanding of the different types of patterns?

• Integration and Cohesion: How effectively are the different pattern types
integrated into a cohesive design?
• Presentation and Explanation: Is the visual presentation clear and well-crafted?
Does the written explanation clearly articulate the design process and choices?

Due Date: [Insert Due Date]

Resources:

• Class notes and readings on pattern types.

• Recommended books and articles on pattern design.
• Online tutorials and resources for pattern creation tools (e.g., Adobe Illustrator,
Photoshop, or other design software).

Tips for Success:

• Start early to allow ample time for research, experimentation, and refinement.
• Seek feedback from peers and instructors during the concept development
phase.
• Experiment with different media and techniques to find what works best for your
design.
• Pay attention to detail and strive for a polished, professional presentation.

Good luck, and have fun creating your pattern!
