Discussion Questions
• What are some of the jobs and hobbies that Mike
considers? (firefighter, auto mechanic, spy, hang glider
pilot, skydiver, pilot, mime, police officer, naturalist,
dentist.)
• Which job or hobby seems to be the most exciting?
The most fun? The most dangerous?
• Which job or hobby would you most like to have? Why?
• Which job or hobby would you least like to have? Why?
Exploring the Story
• Talk about the words dive, Mike, and mime. Write them
so you can see how they are spelled. Notice that they all
end with a silent e. Discuss how the letter i has the long
sound as heard at the beginning of the word ice. Write
the words fly, sky, sly, and spy on the board. Discuss how
the letter y can also make the long i vowel sound. What
other words use this pattern? (by, cry, dry, fry, my, pry,
sty, try.)
• Write each job on a small sheet of paper: mime, police
officer, firefighter, auto mechanic, spy, hang glider pilot,
skydiver, pilot, naturalist, dentist. Add other jobs of
interest, such as actor, artist, attorney, banker, botanist,
bus driver, carpenter, detective, engineer, farmer, graphic
designer, hairdresser, librarian, musician, painter, radio
personality, singer, teacher, veterinarian, writer, welder,
and zoologist. Discuss unfamiliar jobs and help with
reading unfamiliar words as necessary. Put the sheets of
paper into a sack. Draw one paper and pantomime the
job. Other players in the game can guess what the job is.
You may need assist with reading the job title.
