Design of Shaft & Coupling
Fall Semester 2023 - 24 BMEE301L Design of Machine Elements
1. A transmission shaft, supporting two pulleys A and B and mounted between two
bearings C1 and C2 is shown in Fig.2. Power is transmitted from the pulley A to B.
The shaft is made of plain carbon steel 45C8 (σut = 600 N/mm2 and σyt = 380 N/mm2).
The pulleys are keyed to the shaft. Determine the shaft diameter using the ASME
code if, kb = 1.5 and kt = 1.0.

2. A line shaft supporting two pulleys A and B is shown in Fig.3. Power is supplied to the shaft
by means of a vertical belt on the pulley A, which is then transmitted to the pulley B carrying
a horizontal belt. The ratio of belt tension on tight and loose sides is 3:1. The limiting value
of tension in the belts is 2.7 kN. The shaft is made of plain carbon steel 40C8 (σut = 650
N/mm2 and σyt = 380 N/mm2). The pulleys are keyed to the shaft. Determine the diameter of
the shaft according to the ASME code if, kb = 1.5 and kt = 1.0.

3. The armature shaft of a 40 kW, 720 rpm electric motor, mounted on two bearings A and B as
shown in Fig.4. The total magnetic pull on the armature is 7 kN and it can be assumed to be
uniformly distributed over a length of 700mm midway between the bearings. The shaft is
made of steel with an ultimate tensile strength of 770 N/mm2 and the yield strength of 580
N/mm2. Determine the shaft diameter using the ASME code if, kb = 1.5 and kt = 1.0. Assume
that the pulley is keyed to the shaft.

4. An integral shaft consists of two spur gears A and B is mounted between two bearings C1
and C2. The gears are subjected to tangential and radial forces as shown in Fig.1. The pitch
circle diameters of gears A and B are 500 and 250 mm respectively. The shaft is made of
alloy steel 20MnCr5. (σut = 620 N/mm2 and σyt = 480 N/mm2). The factors kb and kt of the
ASME code are 2 and 1.5 respectively. Determine the shaft diameter using the ASME code.
All dimensions are in mm

5. A transmission shaft supporting a helical gear B and an overhung bevel gear D is shown in
Fig.5. The shaft is mounted on two bearings, A and C. The pitch circle diameter of the helical
gear is 450 mm and the diameter of the bevel gear at the forces is 450 mm. Power is
transmitted from the helical gear to the bevel gear. The gears are keyed to the shaft. The
material of the shaft is steel 45C8 (σut = 600 and σyt = 380 N/ mm2). The factors kb and kt of
ASME code are 2.0 and 1.5 respectively. Determine the shaft diameter using the ASME code.

Design of Sleeve or Muff Coupling
Q. Design a muff coupling to connect two steel shafts transmitting 25 kW power at 360
rpm. The shafts and key are made of plain carbon steel 30C8 (Syt = Syc = 400 N/mm 2).
The sleeve is made of grey cast iron FG 200 (Sut = 200 N/mm 2). The factor of safety for
the shafts and key is 4. For the sleeve, the factor of safety is 6 based on ultimate
strength.

Q. Design a rigid flange coupling to transmit a torque of 250 N-m between two coaxial
shafts. The shaft is made of alloy steel, flanges are made of cast iron and the bolts are
made of steel. Four bolts are used to couple the flanges. The shafts are keyed to flange
hub. After designing the various elements, make a neat sketch of the assembly
indicating the important dimensions. The stresses developed in the various members
may be checked .The permissible stresses are given below:
Shear stress on shaft = 100 MPa; Bearing or crushing stress on shaft = 250 MPa
Shear stress on keys = 100 MPa; Bearing stress on keys = 250MPa
Shearing stress on cast iron = 200 MPa; Shear stress on bolts = 100 MPa
