he Cold War, lasting from roughly 1947 to 1991, was a period of geopolitical tension between the Soviet

T
Union and the United States and their respective allies. Here are some of the major events that defined this
era:

### 1. **Truman Doctrine (1947)**

The Truman Doctrine was a policy set forth by U.S. President Harry S. Truman, declaring that the U.S. would
support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from falling into the Soviet
sphere. This doctrine signified the beginning of the U.S.'s policy of containment to stop the spread of
communism.

### 2. **Marshall Plan (1948)**

Officially known as the European Recovery Program, the Marshall Plan was an American initiative to aid
Western Europe economically after the devastation of World War II. The plan provided over $12 billion
(approximately $130 billion in current dollar value) in economic assistance to help rebuild Western European
economies. The Soviet Union and its Eastern Bloc allies refused to participate.

### 3. **Berlin Blockade and Airlift (1948-1949)**

The Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies' railway, road, and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under
Western control. In response, the Western Allies organized the Berlin Airlift to carry supplies to the people of
West Berlin. The blockade was lifted in May 1949, and it was one of the first major crises of the Cold War.

### 4. **Formation of NATO (1949)**

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed as a military alliance of Western nations to
provide collective security against the Soviet Union. This formalized the division between Western and
Eastern blocs.

### 5. **Korean War (1950-1953)**

The Korean War was a proxy war in the Cold War, where North Korea (backed by China and the Soviet Union)
fought against South Korea (supported by the United Nations, particularly the United States). The war ended in
an armistice, with Korea remaining divided at the 38th parallel.

### 6. **Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)**

A 13-day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union over the placement of Soviet nuclear
missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores. The crisis ended with the Soviets agreeing to remove the
missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba and secretly removing U.S. missiles from
Turkey.

### 7. **Vietnam War (1955-1975)**

Another significant Cold War conflict, the Vietnam War saw North Vietnam (supported by the Soviet Union,
China, and other communist allies) fighting against South Vietnam (backed by the United States and other anti-
communist allies). The war ended with the fall of Saigon and the unification of Vietnam under communist
control.

### 8. **Space Race (1957-1969)**

The Space Race was a competition between the Soviet Union and the United States for dominance in space
exploration. Key events included the Soviet launch of Sputnik (the first artificial satellite) in 1957 and the
American Apollo 11 mission, which landed the first humans on the Moon in 1969.

### 9. **Detente (1970s)**

Detente was a period of improved relations between the United States and the Soviet Union, marked by the
signing of treaties such as the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) agreements, which aimed to curb the
arms race.
### 10. **Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989)**
The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support the communist government against insurgent groups. The
United States and other countries supported the Mujahideen resistance. The war drained Soviet resources and
is often cited as one of the factors leading to the decline of the Soviet Union.

### 11. **Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989)**

The Berlin Wall, which had divided East and West Berlin since 1961, was torn down, symbolizing the end of
Cold War divisions in Europe. This event preceded the reunification of Germany in 1990.

### 12. **Dissolution of the Soviet Union (1991)**

The Soviet Union formally dissolved in December 1991, marking the end of the Cold War. The dissolution was
preceded by significant internal reforms under Mikhail Gorbachev, such as Perestroika (economic
restructuring) and Glasnost (political openness), and increasing nationalist movements within the various
Soviet republics.

These events collectively shaped the geopolitical landscape of the latter half of the 20th century and had
lasting impacts on global politics, economics, and society.
