The group was composed of five (5) females and sixteen (16) males who were presently
residing at Barangay Pasi 2, Socorro. The age of these participants ranges from 14 – 25 years old, all
of them are single by civil status and are not employed in any full-time or part-time job.
The summary of results of the conducted survey showed that there is a pressing need that
calls an action to address and alleviate the knowledge gaps on Smoking and Alcoholism. However,
some rated the level of their familiarity with Smoking and Alcoholism as high and very high. Hence the
proponents assumed that these learnings derived from their personal experiences as members of
different social groups in the community.
The participants’ profile showed that they belong to various religious groups, coming from
different Sitio located in Barangay Pasi 2, Socorro. Therefore, the degree of familiarity among the
participants is high. However, the proponent group assumed that they will not face any difficulties to
interact with one another, considering the small number of participants in the group interest.
Additionally, there will be allotted time for welcoming of the participants through various activities to be
able for them to have a meaningful interaction with one another, feel comfortable with the group, and
actively engage by sharing their knowledge and experience during the seminar.
D. TIME FRAME
Since most of the participants are students, the proponent group considered their schedule to identify
the participants’ availability. Moreover, the proponent group perceived Sunday as the most-suited day to
conduct the proposed activity. At the same time, Sunday was considered as the proponents try not to disrupt
any of their class sessions upon the conduct of activity. In addition, the facilitators will use Filipino Language
as the official medium of the communication during the implementation of the activity to ensure that the
proponents can establish rapport among participants and facilitators, facilitates activity for the participants
effectively, clarify queries, and achieves the goal to orient the participants in Smoking and Alcoholism. The
activity will be held in the Barangay Hall, the members of Bachelor of Science in Social Work – Group 1 will
prepare all the necessary equipment needed such as visual aids, sound systems, snacks, and certificates.
The trainer will be given at least a week before the scheduled time and date of activity to prepare
necessary documents, which will serve as the foundation of the entire activity and make possible
adjustments when needed. Further, the proponents perceive the members of Bachelor of Science in Social
Work – Group 1 as the target implementors and facilitators which will steer the activity. They will be
instructed by the OIC Department Head of BS Social Work of Luna Goco Colleges, Inc., to facilitate the
proposed activity.

On May 19, 2024, our team organized a seminar titled "Breaking the Cycle: Understanding the
Repercussion of Smoking and Alcoholism." The primary objective was to educate young individuals about the
dangers associated with smoking and alcohol consumption. Our target audience consisted of youth aged 13-25
years old from Barangay Pasi 2.
Before conducting the seminar, the 3 rd year Social Work – Group 1 visited
Barangay Pasi 2 to carry out a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) survey. We will first
make a courtesy call to the barangay officials to inform them about our activities in
the barangay in collaboration with the 4th-year students who are currently engaged
in community organizing in the barangay. The survey aimed to assess the
participants' current knowledge and awareness regarding smoking and alcoholism.
This step was crucial in tailoring the seminar content to address the specific needs
and knowledge gaps of our audience.
Next, Philip introduced himself and presented the topic of drug abuse. He
explained that drugs are different from the medicines we take, which are prescribed
by doctors. There was a lively discussion and sharing of insights about the topic,
with contributions from our leader and other members.
The final topic was presented by Zaida Yadao, about smoking, where she
explained its harmful effects, especially those of vaping. Zaida provided a
summary of all the topics discussed. The topic was important because it
provided a comprehensive summary and highlighted the significance of the
discussion. Everyone shared their insights on the topic, which is particularly
valuable for the youth. After the question-and-answer session, there was a
picture-taking event with the participants, groups, and barangay officials. The
group also prepared some snacks for the participants.
Course Objectives
Educate participants about the short-term and long-term health effects of smoking and alcoholism on
the body and mind.
Examine the social and familial consequences of smoking and alcoholism, including relationships and
community health.
Highlight the risk factors associated with smoking and alcoholism and the populations most vulnerable
to these behaviors
Provide opportunities for participants to reflect on their own behaviors and develop personal action
plans for health improvement and addiction prevention.

Course Requirements
Pre- Assessment It establishes a baseline understanding of their
current knowledge and attitudes. This process
enables the facilitator to tailor the seminar's content to
address gaps in understanding and reinforce existing
knowledge. By identifying participants'
misconceptions and preconceived notions, the
seminar can more effectively target critical areas that
require attention, ensuring that the information
presented is relevant and impactful. Additionally, pre-
assessment fosters a more engaging learning
environment by aligning the seminar with the
participants' needs and expectations, thereby
enhancing their receptivity and retention of the
material.
Post- Assessment It measures the effectiveness of the educational
intervention and the extent of knowledge gained. By
evaluating participants' understanding after the
seminar, facilitators can determine whether the
seminar's objectives were met and if the information
provided effectively addressed initial misconceptions
and knowledge gaps. This assessment helps in
identifying any remaining areas of confusion or
misunderstanding, allowing for further clarification
and reinforcement of key points.
Evaluation It provides a comprehensive understanding of how
well the seminar met its objectives and the impact it
had on participants. By gathering feedback through
various evaluation methods, such as surveys and
discussions, organizers can assess the strengths and
weaknesses of the seminar's content, structure, and
delivery. This feedback is crucial for identifying what
worked well and what areas require enhancement.
Additionally, evaluation helps measure participants'
learning outcomes, ensuring that the seminar
achieved its educational goals. It also offers insights
into participants' experiences and satisfaction, which
can inform the planning of future seminars to better
meet their needs. Ultimately, evaluation fosters a
cycle of improvement, ensuring that each seminar is
more effective and impactful than the last, thereby
maximizing the benefits for all participants.
REFLECTION

Community Education and Training, a course subject that gives the student social worker an
opportunity to put their learnings into action. Being exposed in a community, is one of the challenges a student
social worker had to overcome, being in the frontline of seeing the problems and concerns of the community.
This activity had helped a lot to develop my skills when it comes to communicating and socializing with
diverse people. At first, I was hesitant to communicate with the officials of Barangay Pasi 2, Socorro. And so, I
seek for help to our seniors, they helped our group by giving as a background of the community and what are
their identified needs. Their guidance was a huge help to make our job easier.
Upon our arrival at the community, I realized that the officials are not cooperative, and so we had to
proceed to our plan b. We were the one who made a way to conduct our Training Needa Inventory survey. With
the help of my teammates, we were able to gather twenty-two (22) youth members to be our respondents. This
had given me the chance to practice my communication skills.
Next, during the preparation and conduct of the activity, I was kind of relieved because I have seen the
interest of the youth members to learn about the topic that they have knowledge gap. And as we start the activity,
I felt nervous at first because as the team leader I had to start the flow of the program and to welcome our
participants. As the first one to speak, it can’t be avoided to feel anxious at first, especially that I am not familiar
with the people I am talking to. As the program flows, I was able to relax myself and proceeded with the
discussion.
It is a great feeling to see my fellow youth listening attentively to our discussion. A core memory I will
never forget because this brought me a great experience where I got to share with my members and with fellow
youth. This activity had helped me to gain more confidence when speaking in front of diverse people and to
better my skills, that are necessary to my profession.

Our seminar focused on the serious effects that alcoholism and smoking have on people and society
worldwide. The effects are extensive and frequently disastrous, ranging from mental and physical health
concerns to societal ramifications. Promoting healthier habits and preventing addiction require an understanding
of these impacts. The seminar focused on the cyclical nature of addiction, in which people use drugs and alcohol
as a coping method for trauma or underlying pressures. It is necessary to treat the underlying causes of the
addiction in addition to the addiction itself in order to break this cycle. This could entail addressing
socioeconomic inequalities, teaching alternate coping mechanisms, and offering help for mental health concerns.
It's possible that the lecture highlighted how crucial early intervention and prevention strategies are in
combating drinking and smoking. Addiction can be considerably decreased by informing people, particularly the
youth, about the dangers of substance abuse and giving them access to tools for treatment and prevention.
Furthermore, it's possible that the seminar brought attention to the importance of community services and
assistance for those battling addiction. A robust support network, whether in the form of counseling services,
support groups, or rehabilitation programs, can have a major impact on the success of recovery efforts.
"Breaking the Cycle: Understanding the Repercussions of Smoking and Alcoholism" concludes by
emphasizing the critical urgency of taking a comprehensive approach to treating addiction. Breaking the cycle of
addiction and fostering healthier, more satisfying lives can be achieved by being aware of the consequences of
alcoholism and smoking, acting early, and offering support for recovery. Having the opportunity to participate in
this seminar is one of the ways that my viewpoint is expanding with regard to the challenges and difficulties that
are now being faced. Not only do I get to impart my expertise, but I also get to listen to their perspectives.
Because I am able to overcome my worries and become more confident when interacting with other people, I
consider it a success because I am able to share my knowledge with others. My experience of meeting new
individuals in various places makes me feel really fortunate to have had the opportunity to do so. Getting to know
other people is a wonderful life experience that should be treasured. The experience taught me that nothing in
life is simple, but that the effort that was put in is so well worth it and so unforgettable that it is something that I
would love to go through again.

As we plan our second seminar on this sem, I felt a little nervous since we are the ones to talk or speak
in front of people this time. Just like what we did in the previous seminar, we planned and organized everything.
We conducted a TNA to find out what topics they've already know and what they are not that aware of. And the
topic that comes out based on our TNA was Smoking and Alcoholism having the lowest rank of awareness of the
participants.
On the day of our seminar, we departed from Calapan at 10:00 am and arrived in Pasi 2, Socorro at
11:00 am. We prepared everything so that our seminar would go smoothly. We ate our lunch at 12:00 pm, then
arranged our venue after. Our seminar was supposed to start at 1:00 pm, but we waited for our participants to
come so we started later than expected. We started our seminar at 2:00 pm, and I am glad that our seminar
went smoothly, the participants are active, and we saw that they are really interested in our topic.
Our seminar ended quickly since our topic was not that broad unlike the previous seminar. But I can say
that I really enjoyed conducting this seminar, though I felt nervous at first but at least we made it through. What I
learned in this seminar is that I should not be afraid of speaking in front of many people, especially if I am going
to educate and help them be aware of what they are not aware of. I learned that if you really love what you're
doing, you'll enjoy it even if you're nervous.

We barely had a week to prepare, and after surveying and evaluating the responses in the Barangay
Pasi II community, we determined that our issue to be discussed would be smoking and alcoholism, with
teenagers as participants. We came up with the title "Breaking the Cycle: Understanding the Repercussions of
Smoking and Alcoholism" and started planning all the materials we would need to do our community education
or training.
During our training, I noticed that our participants are energetic and engaged since our topic is highly
relevant to their age and they are truly experiencing it. We were assisted by two seniors of our department, who
made our activity presentable and organized. We were happy to have them together alongside other counselors
from the barangay. The discussion was also seamless and enjoyable because our participants were enthusiastic
about various activities, and I can see they appreciated the task at hand.
We are glad that the activity went well and that no problems or complications arose. We thanked the
Barangay officials and workers for having us, and I can say that it was a valuable learning experience for us
because it will serve as a steppingstone for our future.

Conducting the seminar on "Breaking the Cycle: Understanding the Repercussions of Smoking and
Alcoholism" for the youth of Barangay Pasi 2 was an enlightening experience. The title itself conveys a sense of
urgency and the need for proactive measures to address these pressing issues within the community.
Engaging with the youth on such a critical topic highlighted the importance of early intervention and
education in combating substance abuse. Many of the attendees were receptive to learning about the
detrimental effects of smoking and alcoholism, recognizing the need to break free from these destructive cycles.
It was encouraging to witness their eagerness to understand the repercussions not only on their own health but
also on their families and communities.
One of the most impactful aspects of the seminar was delving into the root causes and triggers of
substance abuse among the youth. By fostering open dialogue and providing a safe space for discussion, we
were able to address misconceptions and dispel myths surrounding smoking and alcoholism. Through interactive
activities and real-life examples, the participants gained valuable insights into the addictive nature of these
substances and the long-term consequences they entail.
Moreover, the seminar underscored the importance of community support systems in helping
individuals break free from the cycle of addiction. By empowering the youth with knowledge and resources, we
hope to equip them with the tools necessary to make informed decisions and resist peer pressure. Building
resilience and promoting positive coping mechanisms are essential steps in fostering a healthier, substance-free
environment within Barangay Pasi 2.
Overall, the seminar served as a catalyst for raising awareness and instilling a sense of responsibility
among the youth to take charge of their health and well-being. Breaking the cycle of smoking and alcoholism
requires collective action and unwavering commitment from the community, and I am grateful to have been part
of this meaningful initiative.

“Breaking the Cycle: Understanding the Repercussions of Smoking and Alcoholism" is an educational
seminar that was proposed by group 1 of the third-year Bachelor of Science in Social Work Students. The
objective of this seminar is to educate and give awareness to those participants from Barangay Pasi II, Socorro,
so that they can know and have knowledge. This will be accomplished by educating them on health risks,
prevention strategies, and providing support resources to help them make informed, healthy choices. This
seminar was successfully held on May 19, 2024 in the Barangay Hall of Barangay Pasi II, Socorro, Oriental
Mindoro. It was conducted through face-to-face discussion, and several sectors of Baranagay Pasi II, Socorro
were actively participating in the event.
The comparison of the results of the Pre-Test and Post-Test that were taken by the participants before
and after they attended the orientation on "Breaking the Cycle: Understanding the Repercussions of Smoking
and Alcoholism" is presented in Table 2. A total of ten (10) questions are included in both the Pre and Post Test
Examinations. Most of these questions are centered on the concepts of smoking and alcoholism. There were a
few questions that were answered properly by some of the participants. This is because the subject of smoking
and alcoholism is currently highly relevant, and a lot of people already have some knowledge about it. Some of
the individuals, on the other hand, did not have a great deal of understanding regarding the subject matter. The
pre-test that they had first answered showed that there was an improvement after the seminar that they had
attended. The post-test results showed that they had revised their answers, which indicated that they had
learned something, as evidenced by the tiny increase in their scores for each question.
The evaluations of the participants about the conduct of the training seminar on "Breaking the Cycle:
Understanding the Repercussions of Smoking and Alcoholism" are included in Table 3, which also includes the
evaluations of the content, delivery, visuals, preparation, and overall performance of the seminar. The vast
majority of the attendees indicated that they were content with the manner in which the seminar was and carried
out, as seen by their EXCELLENT with each of the eleven suggestions. The responses were quantified and
verbally interpreted using the Likert Scale Analysis. All the items received high scores ranging from 4.00 to 3.00,
which resulted in all of them being interpreted as EXCELLENT.
As a result of the findings of the evaluations and the trainers' observations made during the training
seminar titled "Breaking the Cycle: Understanding the Repercussions of Smoking and Alcoholism," it is evident
that the trainers were successful in overcoming the obstacles that they encountered while preparing for the
event. The facilitators did an excellent job of ensuring that everyone who was intended to be present participated
in the seminar, which resulted in an impressive response from attendees and a flawless operation of the event.
