Weeks 7 – 12 Essay Writing – Conclusion
Conclusion
The purpose of a conclusion is to tie together, or integrate the various issues, research, and so on
covered in the body of the paper, and to make comments upon the meaning of all of it.
In the concluding paragrtaph, you restate the thesis from your introduction (but do not repeat the
introduction too closely), make a brief summary of your evidence and finish with implications resulting
from the writer’s discussion of the topic such as recommendations, forecasting future trends, and the
need for further research.

The conclusion may include:
a ____________ of the arguments presented in the body and how these relate to the essay question
a ____________ of the main point of view presented in the introduction in response to the topic
the _____________ of this view or what might happen as a result
The conclusion is not the place to present new facts (should be in the body of your essay), so
conclusions don’t usually have references unless you come up with a ‘punchy’ quote from someone
special as a final word.
The conclusion to any paper is the final impression that can be made. It is the last opportunity to get the
writer’s point across to the reader and leave the reader feeling as if he or she has learned something.
Here are a few effective strategies to conclude or close the paper.
_________________________
In many cases, the conclusions are simple re-statements of the thesis. These conclusions are much like
their introductions.
_________________________
This is a good closing for argumentative or opinion papers that present two or more sides of an issue.
The conclusion drawn as a result of the research is presented here in the final paragraph.
_________________________
This is a good style for instances when the writer was unable to come up with an answer or a clear
decision about whatever he or she was researching.

Activity
Study the following paragraph and analyse its structure.
In summary, solar power is making a significant difference to the lives of people in the developing
world. By providing safe, clean, and efficient light, it is removing dangers from people’s homes while
brightening their evenings. In addition, the ability to charge a cell phone allows people to communicate
with the world and grow their businesses. The increased time and money available give people the
means to take control of their lives and build for the future. The evidence certainly shows that in parts of
the world where there is abundant sunlight, harnessing solar energy can be a key to improving the lives
of many people.
